IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some nations, it has became very essential for people to have their own houses rather than living in rented accommodations. Because living in renting home may result in wastage of money and low standard of living, whereas living in own property gives ability to a person to save money. I strongly believe it is a positive development which I will discuss in forthcoming paragraphs.
To begin with, there are several reasons for this view. First and foremost, owning a personal property will result in saving money. If person lives in their own house or flat, there will be no need to give rent to anybody rather the renting amount should be used for saving and dealing with unforseen circumstances as future is unpredictable. In addition to this, there is a flexibility in owning own home as a person can built and design their own property considering their own choices and preferences without taking permissions from a land owner. For example, if people lives in a rented apartment, they are required to take permission for almost each and everything from the owners of the land and some may be restricted from many of the activities.
Furthermore, renting a house leads to a financial burden, what if a tenants may not able to give rents in a particular period of time, they may receive short notice which puts a lot of burden in the lives of people. However, personal home gives homeowners independence and financial flexibility. Owners can make certain changes in their houses. Personal property can sometimes also be used for business purposes as if a person is a businessman and do not have enough space in business property for retaining things so person can use their own land for it.
To conclude, as far as I am concerned, having a personal property or home is advantageous for prople in many different aspects such as flexibility to make changes in design of home, saving money and it also reduce financial burden as people can live their life without depressing about giving rents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question: you suggest that people value ownership because it can reduce ongoing rent costs and offer greater control over their homes, and you clearly state that you see this as positive. The examples about saving rent and making changes to a property are relevant. This meets the task well, while some points are less fully developed: the claim that renting lowers living standards is not explained, and the business-use example is difficult to follow and only loosely connected to why ownership is important. To strengthen the response further, explain the reasons more precisely and develop each example so its relevance to the question is unmistakable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and the progression within paragraphs is not always smooth. The second body paragraph moves from the risk of missing rent payments to independence and then to using a home for business, without clearly linking these ideas. Some references are also unclear, as in “what if a tenants” and “for retaining things.” Group related reasons together and use clearer links to show how each example supports the main point; this would make the argument easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “financial burden,” “financial flexibility,” “independence” and “preferences,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “unforeseen circumstances.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “living in renting home,” “give rent,” “personal property” and “depressing about giving rents” do not sound natural in context. Spelling errors such as “prople” and “unforseen” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise housing-related expressions and check spelling; varied, natural phrasing would make the argument clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If person lives in their own house” and a contrast introduced by “whereas.” These attempts show some range, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make sentences difficult to process. Examples include “it has became” instead of a correct present-perfect form, “If person lives” without an article, “a person can built,” and “if people lives.” The sentence beginning “what if a tenants may not able” also has several problems with clause structure and agreement. Practise accurate verb forms, articles and subject–verb agreement, and divide overloaded sentences into clearer units. More reliable control of these patterns would improve readability.
