IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Nowadays, people are more conscious about owning a home because it is a long term investment and also a fixed asset. It's value not decreases gradually but increases time to time.
People think that it is far better to own a home rather than renting monthly. In many countries, people build their home themselves some of them bought on installments.
Firstly, they give the down payment but after that they pay according to their contracts. Mostly, people think that living in a rent house should be expensive and not be beneficial for them. It also depends on the financial stability many people can not afford to buy a house so, they prefer to live in a rent house.
It is vert important to have your own house because the rent of a house increases yearly about 5 percent. I personally think that giving a rent is a wastage of money because it has no savings, no investment and no other benefit. In a rent house, people can not decorate their home according to their choice they have to take permission for the installations, constructions and many ther things. It is a negative situation where people can not do their things according their own choice and can not made their own decisions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the question: you suggest that home ownership is valued as an investment and because rent rises, and you state that you see the situation as negative because renters have less freedom to alter their homes. However, the explanation of why ownership matters is only partly developed, and the negative position is not fully consistent: you also describe buying as beneficial without clearly weighing the advantages and disadvantages. The point about financial stability is relevant but needs explanation or an example. The response is 39 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop these ideas. To improve, explain the reasons more fully and make your overall judgement clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some organisation: the response moves from investment and payment arrangements to renting costs and personal opinion, and “Firstly” and “It also depends” signal relationships between points. However, the progression is not consistently clear. The opening paragraphs repeat the contrast between owning and renting, while the final paragraph combines rising rent, savings, decorating, and personal freedom without a clear sequence. Several ideas are joined in long sentences, such as the sentence beginning “It also depends on the financial stability,” making the links harder to follow. Use distinct paragraphs for reasons and your evaluation, and connect each supporting point explicitly to the main idea. Clearer referencing and fewer abrupt shifts would make the argument easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “long term investment,” “fixed asset,” “installments,” “financial stability,” and “down payment.” These choices show an attempt to discuss housing and finance, but the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, which keeps the message from being consistently precise. For example, “living in a rent house” and “giving a rent” are repeated instead of using standard expressions such as “renting a home” and “paying rent.” “It’s value” also uses the wrong form, and “ther” is a spelling error. Build a wider set of accurate housing collocations and check word forms and spelling; this will make your ideas clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, and the reader can generally understand your main points. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence construction, verb forms, articles, and punctuation. For example, “It’s value not decreases gradually but increases time to time” has problems with the possessive form, verb pattern, and sentence structure. In “people can not made their own decisions,” the modal should be followed by the base verb. The sentence beginning “It also depends on the financial stability” joins separate clauses without suitable punctuation, and several sentences use commas where a full stop or conjunction is needed. Practise accurate basic clauses first, then add complex structures with controlled punctuation.
