IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Nowadays, Students are migrating to other countries for higher studies for which renting is best ways .People with less amount of money have only option to choose renting , some argue that owing a house is best option instead of changing the house , it will increase anxiety and health problems. I believe that owning a house will reduce pressure on main person .

The people with money have no problem to buy home and it is kind of invest .Smart people think that it important to buy house because of anxiety of changing house by paying money. Instead of paying money to house holder invest on buying house ,it relief to family. For example family lived in rented apartmeny. They are belonging to middle class family , and there is only one men runing the house. So,his half of income is spends on by paying rent ,for that type of people have no option to buying house due to less amount of money they have .

In conclusion , owing an house should reduce the stress and anxiety level and by they money people spend on rent they should invest on buying house and it good for her/his future generations

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You give a relevant position: you believe owning a home can reduce pressure, and you mention anxiety about moving and the financial burden of rent. However, the response only partially answers the question. The reasons why home ownership is important are not clearly explained beyond avoiding moves and treating a house as an investment, and the positive-versus-negative judgement is not developed or balanced. The example of a middle-class family is relevant, but it mainly illustrates difficulty affording a home rather than why ownership is valued. The response is also 49 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain both parts. Develop each reason with a clear explanation and extend your conclusion into a direct evaluation of the situation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic overall structure, with an opening paragraph, a body paragraph containing an example, and a conclusion. The reader can identify the general topic and your view. However, progression is limited: the opening moves from students studying abroad to renting and then to home ownership without showing how these points connect to the question. The body also shifts between wealthy buyers, anxiety, investment, and a family unable to afford a home. Linking phrases such as “For example” and “In conclusion” help signal stages, but connections between ideas are often unclear, and some references, such as “they money,” are difficult to follow. Organise the body around distinct reasons and use clear topic sentences and references to make each point build logically.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “renting,” “invest,” “anxiety,” “income,” and “future generations.” These words allow the reader to understand the general subject, but the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, particularly “buy house” and “paying rent.” Some word choices or combinations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “best ways,” “invest on buying house,” and “it relief to family.” Spelling and word-form errors, including “apartmeny” and “runing,” also reduce precision. Build a wider set of natural housing and finance expressions, and check collocations and spelling. For example, use “purchase a property” or “financial security” where appropriate, while ensuring the surrounding sentence expresses the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including a sentence beginning “Instead of paying money…” and an example about a family living in rented accommodation. However, control is inconsistent, and errors frequently make sentences difficult to read. Examples include “People with less amount of money have only option,” “there is only one men runing the house,” and “his half of income is spends.” These show problems with articles, plurals, verb forms, and sentence construction. Punctuation and spacing are also unreliable, with missing spaces after full stops and commas. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine related ideas using controlled clauses. Check subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb forms before submitting.
