IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, in some countries, people living in cities are more keen on owning a home that renting one, reason being high rents, convenience and limitations of the rented property. I strongly agree with the opinion that having a self owned home is always a wiser choice than investing in renting a property.

Many citizens migrate in search of better jobs and lifestyle. Renting a home is one of the essential factors that take a toll on as the cities are already equipped exceeding its capacity. Thus, resulting in hefty amount of rents and policies that resticts the tenant from accessing some common services provided for permanent residents. For many, owning a house in urban areas is a lifetime goal. I personally believe to rather invest on a house, provided one can always choose to finance the property, pay EMIs instead of paying rents. This is an ultimate option to attain a sense of self in the form of investment that comes with returns.

Moreover, Renting a house or commercial space comes with certain limitations such as vacating at the convenience of owner, clauses that restricts the usage of propert thoroughly. This can lead to a great loss for somebody owning a busniess on a rented commercial space. I believe one works very hard and invests time on long term understanding the market, people and vicinity. In many countries, land owner have a right to terminate an agreement with a notice of as less as three months time.

In my opinion, this choice of prefernce has no drawbacks, there are more advantages and positive impacts of having a space of our own. One can not only live up to thier expectations in their own space without a worry of any clauses and policies but has a overall positive effects on a well being and outlook of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that high rents and restrictions on rented homes encourage ownership, and you clearly regard this preference as positive. The discussion of rent, financing a purchase and the risk of a landlord ending a commercial lease gives relevant reasons. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that ownership brings “returns” is not developed, and the discussion of business premises receives more detail than the broader reasons why home ownership matters to people. The statement that there are “no drawbacks” is also absolute and would be more convincing if you acknowledged a possible disadvantage before explaining why the benefits outweigh it. Develop and balance the supporting ideas more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and the final paragraph restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Thus” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections are abrupt or unclear. “Renting a home is one of the essential factors that take a toll on” does not clearly explain what is affected, and “Thus, resulting in…” is not smoothly connected to a complete sentence. The second body paragraph also shifts from residential renting to commercial space without a clear transition. Use more precise referencing and connect each example explicitly to the question of why people value owning a home.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “hefty amount of rents,” “finance the property,” “terminate an agreement” and “long term.” These choices show an effort to discuss housing and ownership beyond basic terms. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, sometimes making the intended meaning less clear: “more keen on owning…that renting,” “a sense of self in the form of investment,” and “positive effects on a well being.” Spelling errors such as “resticts,” “busniess” and “prefernce” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural, precise combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, distinguish “rent” from “rents” and use “property owner” or “landlord” consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional structure in “provided one can always choose to finance the property” and a relative clause in “an investment that comes with returns.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “more keen on owning a home that renting one” needs a comparative construction, while “policies that resticts” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The fragment “Thus, resulting in…” should be joined to a complete clause, and “land owner have a right” needs clearer article and number agreement. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and punctuation choices. Review sentence boundaries, agreement and articles, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each has a clear subject and verb.
