IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people because paying rent is just spending time, tenents have no benifits at the end when they leave the home in countries like Pakistan, India because their is no such policies for the tenents, if they spend a specific time as like to United Kingdom if you spend a decade in a home so after 100 year you will be the owner of the home but in asians countries their is no such policies. So in this eassy, I will discuss the positive and negitive conditions of the topic.

In pakistan it is important to own a home for your accomodation rather than renting one because the money you paid in face of rents will just give you time to spend nothing more your neigbhour will be keep changing which will have effect on your family member because not eveytime you will get a good neigbhourhood also your social bonding will not become stronger because of changing homes, you will face privacy and trust issues.

In developed countries like UK, US, it is good to have a home on lease rather than owing or buying it because their is policy if you spend a specific time in the home and paid your rents so you will get the ownership, you will not face any issues from the neigbhourhood and you does not need to invest alot of money in buying house rather than that on that money you can start any busniess with which you can settled.

In my opinion owning a home rather than renting one is totally depends on the situation of the person the country in which is living and the policies of the country for tenents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both why home ownership matters and whether this is positive or negative, and you give relevant reasons such as housing security, changing neighbours, privacy, and the cost of buying. However, the response only partially fulfils the task because the reasons are not consistently explained and your position is unclear: the conclusion says it “totally depends” on circumstances, without stating whether the situation is positive or negative overall. The comparison with the UK is also confusing, particularly the claim that tenants gain ownership after a set period, and it does not clearly support your evaluation. To strengthen the response, explain the reasons more fully and give a direct, consistent judgement on the overall situation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

Your response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to examples and then a conclusion, and the discussion generally stays on the topic. However, progression between ideas is not always clear. The first paragraph combines several claims about rent, tenant policies, and countries in one long sentence, making the relationship between them difficult to follow. Linking phrases such as “because” and “rather than” recur, while the shift from Pakistan to developed countries is abrupt. Some references, including “that money” and “which will have effect,” are not immediately clear. Give each main reason its own focused paragraph, use linking expressions more selectively, and make the connection between examples explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “ownership,” “renting,” “privacy,” “social bonding,” and “neighbourhood,” so the reader can identify the main subject and several supporting ideas. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations make meaning unclear, such as “paying rent is just spending time,” “money you paid in face of rents,” and “home on lease.” There are also frequent spelling errors, including “tenents,” “benifits,” “eassy,” and “busniess,” which reduce accuracy and can distract the reader. Build a more precise set of housing-related expressions and check spelling carefully; for example, distinguish between paying rent, securing accommodation, and purchasing a property.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using clauses with “because,” “if,” and “which,” but complex structures are often faulty and errors occur frequently. For example, “their is no such policies” has problems with subject–verb agreement and number, while “you does not need” and “your neigbhour will be keep changing” show errors in verb forms. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also difficult to follow in the long opening sentence. These issues sometimes make the intended meaning hard to understand. Practise building shorter, complete sentences first, then combine ideas with accurate subordinate clauses. Check agreement, verb forms, articles, and punctuation when editing.
