IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Certain countries believe that owning a house is important as compared to leasing one. This essay will evaluate these reasons.
Many countries have more population than they can suffice. This leads to a higher demand of houses. Owning a house is often reflected as having a financial security that can act as a safety net during difficult times. Hence, a lot of countries lay emphasis on owning a house. In countries like India the rents have sky rocketed in metro cities. A huge junk of salaries of someone from a tier 3 city who moves to places like Mumbai and Bangalore is burnt in monthly rents. This makes the return on investment occur later which is why people prefer owning a house despite it being small.
I believe this is a negative situation because many working professionals tend to switch cities and countries in order for better growth opportunities. Buying a house in that case might be a huge bet one has to take. This can be eliminated if houses are provided at a cheaper rent. This could not just eliminate the huge investment one has to make but can also significantly reduce the risks associated with it. A country must continously thrive to uplift people from lower economic classes. This can only be achieved if they are given a chance to work in metro cities with comes with the factor of rent, food and electricity. One generation can change the entire trajectory of their upcoming generations.
To recapitulate, i believe that renting a house for lower income level class can be better than owning a house in developing countries because it gives people a chance to become financially stable and contributes to the overall growth of an economy

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question: you explain that home ownership can represent financial security and respond that the emphasis on buying is negative, particularly for workers who may need to move for better opportunities. The examples of high rents in Mumbai and Bangalore help make the explanation relevant. Your position is clear, and the conclusion returns to the benefits of affordable renting. However, some points are asserted more than developed: the link between population pressure and the preference for ownership is not fully explained, and the claim that cheaper rents would reduce risks could use a specific explanation. To strengthen the response, develop each reason with a clearer cause-and-effect chain and qualify broad claims about what “many countries” believe.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining why ownership is valued, a paragraph presenting your negative view, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “Hence,” “This makes,” and “To recapitulate” help signal relationships. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. Some connections are less smooth, however: the opening sentence says the essay will evaluate reasons but does not preview your position, and the shift from population pressure to financial security needs a more explicit link. The long sentence beginning “A country must…” also combines several ideas. Use clearer topic sentences and divide complex points so that each paragraph develops one main line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial security,” “safety net,” “investment,” “growth opportunities,” and “trajectory.” These choices help communicate the economic and social dimensions of housing. You also attempt more specific expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural: “more population than they can suffice,” “a huge junk of salaries,” and “the return on investment occur later” do not express the intended meanings precisely. Spelling and word-form slips such as “sky rocketed” and “continously” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling; for example, describe population as exceeding housing supply and say that rent takes up a large share of income. This would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “which is why,” and “if,” and most of your meaning remains clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as “Buying a house in that case might be a huge bet one has to take.” However, there are some grammatical and punctuation errors. In “Certain countries… one. This essay,” a space is needed after the full stop; “the return on investment occur later” has a subject–verb agreement problem; and “with comes with the factor” has an incorrect clause structure. The final sentence also needs consistent capitalisation of “I.” Review agreement, clause construction, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex structures with careful proofreading.
