IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Most of the countries people donot want to live at rent house. Owing a house means, I have a house of mine.

Rent house have both positive and negavtive sides. More over, in some countries, rent house have many rules and rent people have to maintain that rules. Additionally, They have no freedom. At the end of month, they have to pay a huge amount for rent. Because of this, rent people can not lead a good life and they may face financial difficulty.

The postive side is while a new person comes to a new city, rent house is very essential. A new people can not create a house. At that moment, he needs a room or flat for live. Rent house is the last option for them.

Owning a home is a blessing for a person. Furthore more, He can live freedomly. He does not maintain any kind of rules or restrictions. If he has extra room, he can rent this to other people. From this, he can earn some money and it will help him financially.

Although, Own house have some inconveniences. He has to pay different types of tax and need huge number of money to buy a home. Further more, he has to follow all government rules and restrictions.

However, owning a home and rent house both have advatges and obstacles.

Overall, I believe that owing a home is more beneficial than rent house. Owing to this, I think this is a positive situation and people can develop their lifestyle by this.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both questions and make your view clear at the end: you consider why people may prefer ownership and judge it to be positive. The points about rental rules, monthly payments, freedom, and earning income from an extra room are relevant. However, the explanation of why home ownership is especially important in some countries remains general, and several ideas are asserted rather than developed. For example, “people can develop their lifestyle” does not explain what benefits this brings, while the discussion of renting mainly lists disadvantages before briefly noting its usefulness to newcomers. Develop the reasons with specific explanation or examples, and make the positive or negative judgement more explicit throughout, rather than relying mainly on the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from renting, to its usefulness for newcomers, to home ownership and a concluding opinion. This gives the reader a general sense of the discussion. However, progression is uneven: the opening does not clearly introduce the two questions, and the paragraph beginning “Although” presents disadvantages of ownership without clearly connecting them to your overall positive view. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Additionally,” “Although,” and “However” are used, but some are awkward or do not show the relationship between ideas accurately. The final paragraph also repeats the conclusion rather than drawing the comparison together. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each paragraph’s points to the central argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial difficulty,” “restrictions,” “tax,” and “inconveniences,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “rent house” and “owning a home.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, such as “advateges,” “negavtive,” “freedomly,” and “rent people.” Some combinations are unnatural, including “live at rent house” and “huge number of money,” which can make the message less clear. Build a more accurate set of housing-related expressions and check spelling and collocation. For instance, distinguish between “renting a property,” “tenants,” and “homeowners” rather than repeating the same basic phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer structures, including “Although, Own house have some inconveniences” and the conditional sentence “If he has extra room, he can rent this to other people.” These show an effort to go beyond short statements. However, the range remains limited, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb patterns occur frequently. Examples include “Rent house have,” “A new people can not create a house,” and “he needs a room or flat for live.” Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “Additionally, They” and “Although,” at the start of a clause. Practise accurate basic sentence patterns first, especially singular and plural agreement, articles, and infinitives, then build more complex sentences around them.
