IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In a few countries having your own house instead of leasing one is very essential for public. I believe this is generally a positive situation because it gives a sense of stability and security, although it can create a financial pressure

One major reason that people avoid renting is that it provides long term financial security. They. do not have to worry about the increasing rents and landlord asking them to leave. They can also profit from the increasing property value over time, which helps build wealth and secure the future of themselves and also of their family. For example in Pakistan if a person owns a house he can avoid the monthly rent expense and save the money, then in future he can use it for childrens education or after retirement.

Another crucial reason is that is gives a sense of ownership and independence. You can renovate the property using your own designs without asking the landlord for approval. For instance a young individual who owns a house can decorate and construct the property as he wants without being stopped by anyone which give him a feel of independence and helps him feel more setteled. He does not have to worry about being kicked out and changing houses frequently like someone who is renting a place

In conclusion people prefer owning a home instead of renting one becaues it give them a feel of security and independence. In my opinion this is a postive situation, provided that people consider their financial circumstances beforehand.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the question: it gives reasons for preferring ownership—financial security and independence—and clearly states that this is generally positive, with a qualification about affordability. The Pakistan example also helps illustrate how avoiding rent may support family goals. This meets the task well, and the position is clear. However, the financial argument is developed more fully than the explanation of why home ownership is especially important in some countries; the response could explain relevant cultural or social expectations. The claim that owners can profit from rising property values is also presented broadly, without acknowledging that values may not always rise. Developing these points with more precise support would make the response more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates the position. The progression from financial security to independence is logical, and examples are placed alongside the ideas they support. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, however, with repeated patterns such as “Another crucial reason” and “For example/For instance.” Some references are also unclear: “which give him a feel of independence” follows a long sentence and makes the connection less smooth. The opening paragraph ends without punctuation, and the conclusion largely repeats earlier wording rather than synthesising the argument. Use a wider range of linking and referencing, and make sentence boundaries and connections more deliberate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial security,” “property value,” “ownership,” “independence,” and “renovate.” These choices allow the main ideas to be understood. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “very essential for public,” “profit from the increasing property value,” and “a feel of independence.” Spelling errors, including “setteled,” “becaues,” and “postive,” also reduce accuracy. Some wording is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “feel” and “security.” Aim for more natural collocations and precise phrasing, and proofread spelling carefully; this would make the vocabulary more flexible and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “provided that people consider their financial circumstances beforehand” and a relative clause in “which helps build wealth.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. Examples include “They. do not,” the missing apostrophe in “childrens education,” “that is gives,” and the agreement error in “which give him.” The opening sentence also lacks a final full stop, while the long sentence beginning “For instance” would benefit from clearer punctuation or division. Work on subject–verb agreement, possessives, sentence boundaries, and accurate clause construction. More consistently controlled complex sentences would strengthen the range as well as accuracy.
