IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

I many regions buying your own house is very crucial for citizens instead of renting a home. This is because owning your home can save money. I believe that this is a positive situation because you do not have fear of losing it and also it is a life time saving.

Moreover, having a home is essential as it will save your money. If you rented a house, you have to pay money. But, if you have it, then you do not have to pay for it and you can keep this money and it will be beneficial for you. For instance, if you suddenly fell ill and you do not have any source to get money then the money that you save because of your own home rather than renting a house will help you during that time. Hence, it prove to be a best source for us in difficult time.

Furthermore, it is a positive situation because we do not have fear of being thrown out of the house. To illustrate, in a rented house, owner can tell you to leave his house anytime, as a result you will be homeless. In constrast, if you have your own house, you can live peacefully and nobody can dare to throw you out of your house and also decorate it according to you will. It also favourable in your future, if uyou do not have job in future, you need not to worry about rent.

In conclusion, having your residence is a good thing in term of money and in peace.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain that people may value ownership because it avoids rent and provides security, and you clearly state that you see this as positive. The examples about illness, being asked to leave, and future unemployment are relevant. However, the reasons are not always fully explained: for example, the claim that owning a home “can save money” overlooks costs such as mortgage payments and maintenance, and the illness example does not clearly show how ownership itself creates savings. Develop the explanation of why home ownership matters in the countries concerned, and qualify broad claims. A more precise, consistently supported argument would make the response more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. “Moreover” and “Furthermore” signal the two main reasons, and the examples generally follow the points they illustrate. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive: the first body paragraph repeats the idea that owning a home saves money without clearly distinguishing the benefit from the example. Some links are also awkward or unclear, such as “Hence, it prove to be a best source for us in difficult time.” The conclusion restates the position but adds little synthesis. Organise each paragraph around one clearly stated reason, then explain and illustrate it, using references and linking phrases more precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “renting,” “homeless,” “source,” and “decorate.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “a life time saving,” “a best source,” and “favourable in your future.” There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “constrast” and “u you,” which reduce accuracy. Repetition of “house,” “money,” and “positive situation” also limits flexibility. Build a more precise range for discussing housing and financial security, and check collocations and spelling so that your meaning is expressed naturally and consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if you suddenly fell ill” and “if you have your own house.” The main argument remains understandable, but errors occur across the response and sometimes make sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “I many regions” and “it prove to be,” where the sentence opening and subject–verb agreement are faulty, as well as “owner can tell you to leave his house,” which needs clearer article and plural control. The sentence beginning “In constrast” also runs several ideas together. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentence boundaries, then check each longer sentence for a clear subject and verb.
