IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In this contemporary world, it is irrefutable that, in few countries possessing home rather than renting one is very crucial for individuals .In my opinion this is a positive development because it preserve unnecessary expense. I will elaborate on my point of view in the upcoming paragraph with valid reason and appropriate examples.

Discusing the positive aspect of this development, individuals are becoming increasingly aware of expenses. Moreover, they know very well that where should they spend money or not. In rented home a person has responsibility to pay rent instand of investing money on several items such as furniture, decoration, and interior design. These types of expenes are major, therefore it leads dramatical investment on items. For instance, whenever any special occasion comes at that time household should not buy any particular items for their rented house, it helps to preserve money because money is precious resources it should be used wisely.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a clear view that home ownership is positive, and you begin to explain a financial reason, referring to rent and spending on furniture or decoration. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: it does not adequately explain why owning a home is important in some countries, and the positive/negative judgement is supported by only one partly developed point. The example about avoiding purchases for a rented house does not clearly establish why ownership itself preserves money. The final paragraph begins, “Moreover, another significant reason is the” but is unfinished, leaving the discussion incomplete. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, which substantially limits the development of both parts of the question. Develop several relevant reasons and explain each with a clear example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening paragraph gives your position, and the next paragraph introduces a supporting point. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “For instance” show an effort to connect ideas. However, progression is limited because the main explanation is difficult to follow: the discussion moves from rent to household purchases without clearly showing how these points support home ownership. The unfinished final sentence also interrupts the structure and leaves the reader without a conclusion. Some connections are mechanical or unclear, and the opening promises “valid reason and appropriate examples” without delivering a complete argument. Use one paragraph for each reason, explain the relationship between sentences explicitly, and finish with a brief conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “rent,” “furniture,” “decoration,” “interior design,” and “expenses,” which helps establish the subject. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “positive development” and “significant reason.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors make parts of the response less clear, including “Discusing,” “instand,” “exp enes,” and “dramatical investment.” Phrases such as “preserve unnecessary expense” and “money is precious resources” are not natural in this context. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “save money,” “avoid rental costs,” and “a valuable resource.” Proofread spelling and choose vocabulary that expresses the intended financial relationship precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, for example, “For instance, whenever any special occasion comes…” and “In my opinion this is a positive development because…”. However, the range remains limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to interpret. In “it preserve unnecessary expense,” the verb does not agree with its subject, while “they know very well that where should they spend money or not” has incorrect word order in an indirect question. The sentence beginning “In rented home a person has responsibility” also lacks accurate article use, and punctuation spacing is inconsistent. The final fragment, “Moreover, another significant reason is the,” is incomplete. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, indirect-question structure, and complete sentence boundaries before attempting longer constructions.
