IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In a modern era, in every country there are some people who prefer to get their own home while on the othe side some prefer to live on rental basis. It is completed depended on people living standards and choices which makes them to reside in their own comfort level.

Owning a home is mostly everyone choice because it give them more comfort and possession of a land, where they can do anything freely without dependents and approvals. If they want to decorate the house or do something for construction they are open for it anytime and it makes them owning a valuable entity in this era. While on the other side there are people who prefer to be on rent by choice or for some reasons, for example students who are far from their home and have to leave their home for studies they rent apartments in compulsion like wise the middle class family who never own a house from their ancestors, they are rely on rental base system until they have enough resources to buy their own house.

I guess it is totally depends on the situation and condition of every family or person which makes them to stay in their home or renting apartments. In general owning a separte possession of home is more important than renting a home or apartment where you cant have choices to do any thing in the space because rightfully you can't have possession of that place and you are dependent on the landlord who can through you out anytime by his choise and needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that ownership offers comfort, freedom to alter a property, and a valuable asset, and you explain that students or families with limited resources may rent. You also indicate a preference for owning a home, especially in the final paragraph. However, the reasons are only partly developed, and the response does not clearly explain why home ownership is especially important in some countries. The discussion of renting takes up substantial space without fully connecting it to the question’s focus on the importance attached to ownership. Your view on whether this is positive or negative is also not stated directly; the final paragraph implies a positive view, but does not evaluate the wider effects. Develop the reasons and state your position explicitly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, a main paragraph and a concluding paragraph, and the examples about students and families give the discussion some organisation. However, progression is limited: the first paragraph mainly restates the contrast between owning and renting, while the final paragraph repeats that the choice depends on circumstances before returning to ownership. Linking phrases such as “While on the other side” and “In general” are used, but they do not always show the precise relationship between ideas, and some sentences contain several points without clear separation. The reference to “they” in the discussion of families is also not immediately clear. Organise the body around distinct reasons for valuing ownership, then use a separate conclusion to answer the positive-or-negative question.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “possession,” “decorate,” “construction,” “resources,” and “landlord,” which helps communicate the topic. However, the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the meaning harder to follow. For example, “rental basis,” “valuable entity,” and “separate possession of home” are not natural ways to express these ideas. There are also spelling errors such as “separte” and “choise,” and informal wording such as “throw you out.” Aim for precise housing-related collocations and check spelling. Using terms such as “property ownership,” “financial security,” and “evict” would make the argument clearer and more appropriate for an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If they want to decorate the house…” and a relative clause in “who are far from their home.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to read. Examples include “it give them,” “It is completed depended,” and “I guess it is totally depends,” where verb forms and agreement are not controlled. Articles and sentence construction also need attention, as in “Owning a home is mostly everyone choice.” Some sentences run on or join ideas unclearly, particularly the final sentence. Practise building accurate sentences with one main idea at a time, then check subject–verb agreement, verb forms, articles and punctuation.
