IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There are several countries in the world, where buying a parmanent house is very essential than living in rent.In my opinion, i believe owning a house is quite necessary to lead a peaceful and comfortable life.

Home is a place, where we live together with our near and dear ones. Moreover, it can provide safety and protection from any kinds of endanger.Owning a parmanent house always be a great feelings for me.Living at my house always gives that comfortness which we coud not avail from any other houses. If anyone has enough economical stability, they should buy their own home,so that they dont have to think about their future residence. We also have that right to decorate our own home as like we want ,which we can not avail for renting house. We dont have to need any permission for any refurnishment of our home.

In contrast, living a rent house is also have some positive sides ,such as it is way more convenient than a parmanent home. Also, the people who has a limited income, they wont be able to buy their own home,so renting is a good option for them.Besides that, sometimes we have to work at diffrent places of the city,so in that case we have to shift one place to another for our working purpose. In that case, rent a house always be a good choice. So, overall minimise the expenditure and savings for future purpose, renting home always gives a relief .There are another positive sides, which is we can easily change the house as much as we can according to our convenience,as we have this power to do so.No one can deprive us from it.So, it also makes our life easier.

At the end, i can say that, though renting a house has many benefits for our daily life, owning a home always be more satisfactory. It ensure us a well setteled future ahead.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain why home ownership matters, citing security, comfort, control over decoration and a settled future, and you give a clear positive view of owning a home. You also acknowledge reasons renting can be preferable, including limited income and the need to move for work. These points are relevant, but the explanation of why ownership is especially important in some countries remains general, and several claims—such as renting reducing expenditure—would benefit from clearer support or qualification. The discussion of renting is more detailed than the development of your final judgement. To strengthen the response, explain the social or financial reasons behind the importance of ownership and develop the comparison before concluding.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph focused mainly on ownership, a contrastive paragraph about renting, and a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. You use linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In contrast,” “Besides that,” and “At the end” to signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the renting paragraph contains many points in quick succession, so the progression is less controlled. References such as “it” and “that case” are not always immediately precise, and the conclusion repeats the preference for ownership without drawing together the comparison. Group related reasons and use clearer links between each claim and its explanation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough vocabulary to discuss housing, security, affordability and mobility, including phrases such as “limited income,” “economical stability,” and “future residence.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, for example “parmanent,” “comfortness,” “endanger,” and “refurnishment.” Some combinations are also unnatural, including “living in rent,” “rent a house,” and “well setteled future.” Repetition of “house,” “home,” and “positive sides” limits the range. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your main ideas, but they sometimes make the expression awkward. Build a bank of accurate housing collocations and check spelling and word forms when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses: “If anyone has enough economical stability, they should buy their own home” and “which we can not avail for renting house.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb forms. For example, “Owning a parmanent house always be” needs a finite verb, while “the people who has” has an agreement error; “renting a house is also have” combines incompatible verb patterns. Punctuation and spacing around commas are also inconsistent. Practise accurate clause patterns and check each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
