IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The given essay throws light on the people buying their own homes rather than renting a home . Different reasons are behind this .
First of all there are some positive and negative aspects of this concept.People wishing to buy their own home are of the opinion that it os better to have a house wether it is small or big .They are of the view that it is better to have their own home rather than paying too much in form of rent. They think it is better to build a house when they're not much responsibilityof family.
while the other group think it is a waste of time to spend money and time on making a house .They think the world is a temporary place to live in . Therefore instead of wasting money on home ,it is better to pay attention to business to meet up the expenses of life .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies two possible viewpoints: owning a home may avoid paying rent, while renting may leave money available for business and living expenses. However, it does not fully answer the prompt. The reasons for home ownership are only briefly stated, and the essay does not clearly say whether this situation is positive or negative; presenting opposing views is not the same as giving your own judgement. The ideas are also difficult to assess because they are not explained with examples or consequences. In addition, the response is 153 words, below the required 250. To improve, state your position directly, explain why home ownership matters in the countries concerned, and develop each point with a specific example or result.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: it introduces the topic, then contrasts people who favour buying with those who prefer not to spend on a home. Connectors such as “First of all,” “while,” and “Therefore” show an effort to guide the reader. However, the progression is limited, and the response has no clear concluding paragraph to summarise the writer’s view. The contrast introduced by “while” is not clearly separated into paragraphs, and some links between ideas are abrupt. For example, the move from buying a home to building one “when they're not much responsibilityof family” is hard to follow. Use distinct paragraphs for the reasons, your evaluation, and the conclusion, with clearer links between each point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some topic-related vocabulary, including “rent,” “own home,” “expenses of life,” and “temporary place to live in,” so the main subject is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, which makes some ideas difficult to understand. For instance, “meet up the expenses of life” is not a natural collocation, and “waste of time to spend money and time” repeats the same idea without adding precision. There are also spelling errors such as “wether” and “os.” Aim for more accurate housing and financial vocabulary, and check spelling carefully. More precise expressions would help you explain the reasons and consequences rather than relying on repeated references to money and homes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, including “They think it is better to build a house when…” and a contrast beginning “while the other group…”. However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation are frequent enough to make parts difficult to follow. For example, “People wishing to buy their own home are of the opinion that it os better” contains a misspelling and an unclear clause, while “the other group think” has a subject–verb agreement problem. Several sentences run together without appropriate punctuation, and spacing around full stops and commas is inconsistent. Practise building clear sentences with one main idea each, then check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
