IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some regions, people prefer to own a house rather than renting one as it is crucial for them. This is because, it will provide them social security and financial benefits. I strongly believe that it has positive impact such as freedom to live life peacefuly which outweigh its disadvantages.

Moreover, owning a home is important for society as nobody can harm them by throwing them out of the house. If they live in a rent house, they always stress about the increase in rent payment and landlord can throw them out of the house anytime. In contrast, if they are living in their own home, they do not worry about anything. Beside this, it will proves to be a favourable thing for them. They can save money and invest in some other work or buisness. They gradually become wealthy and can contribute in some social work and give charity to support poor community.

Furthermore, it is a positive step. In your own house, you can live freely without any hesitation and do whatever you want to do. For instance, you can decorate it according to your own will. It will be a beneficial not only for you but also for the next generation as a long-term investment. Some people may find financial difficulties in buying a house but their merits outweigh its demerits.

In conclusion, buying your own home is best thing to do as it is benficial in terms of money, social protection, freedom and also the peace of mind.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain why home ownership matters, citing security from eviction and the chance to build financial stability, and you clearly judge it to be positive. The conclusion reinforces this position. These relevant points meet the task well, but their development is uneven. The security argument is explained through a contrast with renting, while claims that owners can “save money,” become wealthy, and support the community are asserted rather than explained; ownership can also involve costs and debt. The point about freedom and decorating is relevant but could be linked more clearly to why ownership is especially important in some countries. Develop these ideas with specific reasoning or examples to make the response more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states the position, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion summarises the view. The progression from security and financial benefits to personal freedom is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help the reader. However, some linking is mechanical, and connections between claims are occasionally unclear. For example, “Beside this, it will proves to be a favourable thing” does not clearly identify what “it” refers to, while the move from saving money to becoming wealthy and doing social work needs a more explicit explanation. Use referencing that clearly identifies the subject and connect each supporting point to the paragraph’s main idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “social security,” “financial benefits,” “long-term investment,” and “peace of mind.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems make the writing less natural. Phrases such as “live life peacefuly,” “rent house,” and “do some social work” are imprecise or awkward, while “buisness” and “benficial” are misspelled. Repetition of “house,” “beneficial,” and “do” also limits flexibility. Aim to use more precise housing and finance vocabulary, and check spelling and common word partnerships. These improvements would make your meaning clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional contrast (“If they live in a rent house…”) and a concession (“Some people may find financial difficulties… but…”). The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence structure and grammatical forms occur across the response. For example, “it will proves” combines an incorrect verb form with the modal “will”; “it has positive impact” needs an article; and “buying your own home is best thing” also needs an article. The opening comma in “This is because, it will provide…” is unnecessary, and the long sentence about saving, investing, and becoming wealthy would benefit from clearer punctuation. Practise accurate articles, modal verb patterns, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
