IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries owning a home rather than renting is very important because there are several reasons why poeple want to own the house rather than renting.

In some countries owening a house rather than renting seem to be a sign of success. People feel that buying a house is there investment and the value may increase over time so for the future of there family some poeple want to buy a houe for the future investment. In own house you can feel freedom you can make changes easily according to your own taste, your are not bond to any one. Homeowners are not worry about the landlords to ask them to leave. People also want a permanent house for their children. For example, sometime owning a house shows that the person has achieved their goals.

Furthermore, renting a house have many disadvantages like if your children are studing next to the house in a school if the owner ask you to leave the house than it can affect their studies. Another reason is that you have bond to some one like you have to pay a monthy rent for the house. If you have not a proper source of income than you feel presure all the time that i have to pay rent and many other things.

In my openion, this ia a negative situation because you have not freedom at this situation. Owning a house is the need of every family in this era and they want to fulfill their dreams in their house like can make changes easily that they like and they have not any mental pressure to put on and they provide a permanent home to their children.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that home ownership can signal success, provide an investment, offer freedom to make changes, and give children a stable home. You also state that you view the situation negatively. However, the response only partially fulfils the task because the reasons are listed more than explained, and the final position is unclear: you call the situation negative, but then describe owning a home as a need and emphasise its benefits. The discussion of renting’s disadvantages does not fully explain why ownership is especially important in some countries. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation and example, and make your evaluation consistent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, with reasons for ownership, disadvantages of renting, and a concluding opinion separated into paragraphs. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “For example” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph moves quickly from success to investment, freedom, landlords, and children, while the final paragraph repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. Some connections are awkward or unclear, such as “Another reason is that you have bond to some one.” Use one central idea per paragraph, explain how each supporting point relates to it, and use clear references and transitions instead of relying on a list of points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “investment,” “landlords,” “permanent house,” and “mental pressure.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling, and word-form errors make the writing less clear or natural. Examples include “there investment” for “their investment,” “owening,” “houe,” “studing,” and “presure.” Phrases such as “you have bond to some one” and “a proper source of income” are also awkward in context. Build a more accurate set of expressions for housing and financial security, and check spelling and collocations carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish the reasons for ownership from the disadvantages of renting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences and subordinate clauses, for example, “People feel that buying a house is there investment and the value may increase over time,” but these structures are often faulty. Errors in agreement and verb forms include “owning a house … seem,” “renting a house have,” and “Homeowners are not worry.” There are also problems with articles, pronouns, and sentence construction, as in “In own house” and “they want to fulfill their dreams in their house like can make changes.” These frequent errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with clauses using “because,” “if,” and “which,” while checking agreement and complete sentence structure.
