IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

A working teenager in any part of the world always aspires to have a home of his own. In some countries, owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people mainly because it proves that a person is economically independent. Due to the social and economic respect that it gives to the person, I beleive that this is a positive development.

Although there are a lot of people who require to shift and relocate to a different place every now and then in various professions, if a person owns his/her home, that becomes a sign of how economically good that person is doing in his/her life. A person also doesn't have to live in someone else's residence and deal with the owner regarding different issues or requests. There are many countries where it happens that the owner doesn't give importance or attention to the tenant's problems. Because of this also, there is more importance of owning a home rather than renting one.

In a country like India, family members of bride often check if the boy has got his own flat or home before deciding on the marraige. Owning a home is also a symbol of independence. A person doesn't have to live under the ownership of someone else and it is great for investment as well. Nowadays, a lot of people are attracted to the profession of real estate as the property today is one of the best means to invest money. It gives people financial independence and also social respect. Despite not owing a home, a person can be financially good and also resepected in society so this shouldn't be like a strict rule or burden on someone to compulsorily own a home.

Because of the financial independence and a possibility of investement that it gives to a person, owning a home is considered important in many countries. To sum up, a person should not own a home in the greed of social status but because of the benefits it gives to him and his family.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain that home ownership can signal economic independence and social standing, and you clearly regard its importance as positive, while cautioning that it should not become a burden. The examples about landlords and marriage customs in India make the response relevant and help support your explanation. This meets the task well, though the reasons are not equally developed: the point about landlords is broad, and the investment benefit is mentioned several times without much explanation of its consequences. To strengthen the response further, explain more specifically why ownership matters in the countries concerned and develop the benefits and drawbacks with clearer supporting detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas generally remain on topic. However, progression within and between paragraphs is not always clear. The second paragraph moves from relocation to economic status and then landlord problems, while the next combines marriage customs, independence and investment. Repeated links such as “also” and “Because of this” make connections feel mechanical, and the conclusion repeats the investment and independence points rather than drawing the discussion together. Group related reasons into focused paragraphs and use clearer references to show how each example supports the main point. This would make the overall organisation more consistently easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “economically independent,” “tenant,” “social respect” and “financial independence,” which allows you to discuss the topic clearly. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “means to invest money.” However, several word choices and collocations are awkward or repetitive: “how economically good that person is doing,” “there is more importance of owning,” and repeated references to independence and respect. Spelling errors such as “beleive,” “marraige,” “resepected” and “investement” are noticeable. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; greater precision and variety would make the argument sound more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if a person owns his/her home” and a concession beginning “Despite not owning a home.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions reduce accuracy. For example, “people who require to shift” needs a different verb pattern, and “a person also doesn't have to live” shifts from the plural “people” to the singular without a clear reason. The long sentence beginning “Although there are a lot of people…” is difficult to follow because several ideas are packed together. Practise consistent subject reference and verb patterns, and divide long sentences where needed.
