IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries people believe it's crucial to buy a house over renting one.

Citizens of few countries have a view point that buying a house is a safer and long term investment. Yet there are some drawbacks as well but after comparing both views, i personally believe it states mostly positive development.

Firstly, There are a lot of benefits of owning a house whether it is in a village or in a city. For instance, when a person buy a house he become more stress free as he doesn't has landlord pressure. In addition to that, it is also been seen as a long term investment or saving in many cultures. As a result, though it requires a handsome amount to buy a house, people don't think a lot before giving up that money. Subsequently, if a individual has ownership of his house he stays away from the contract related scams. which is commom practice that done by almost every landlord. Apparently, they take initial non-refundable amount from rental person by prommising him a house in perticular price.

Appart from these, according to our psychology we stays more relaxed if we have enough savings or investments to cope with future financial crisis. Whereas there are some disadvantages exist such as buying house requires a lot of paper work and money. Consequently, many middle class persons doesn't have fundings to buy high-price house. Therefore they take bank loan with higher interest rate. if they are unable to repay it, they may face consequences.

In conclusion, Although there are some drawbacks as stress of loans or heavy paper work, buying a house is much more practical practice used by many citizens to invest money. As a result, i personally believe owning home is a positive development in every individuals life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain why home ownership matters, citing security, investment, freedom from landlord pressure and rental scams, and you clearly judge it to be positive. This meets the core requirements, and your examples make the response relevant. The discussion also recognises disadvantages, especially paperwork, high prices and loan repayments. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that landlords commonly use scams is broad, and the financial-security point could be linked more clearly to why ownership is especially valued in some countries. The position is clear, but fuller explanation and more balanced development of the reasons would make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the main ideas generally progress from benefits to drawbacks. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “In addition to that,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some connections are unclear. “Yet there are some drawbacks as well” introduces drawbacks before the essay has explained its main reasons, while “Appart from these” does not clearly signal the shift to financial security and disadvantages. The sentence beginning “which is commom practice” is also detached from the preceding idea. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the paragraph’s main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss housing and finance, including “long term investment,” “ownership,” “non-refundable,” “bank loan” and “interest rate.” These choices show an attempt to use topic-specific language, and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “landlord pressure,” “rental person,” “high-price house” and “practical practice.” Spelling errors, including “commom,” “prommising” and “perticular,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe pressure from a landlord as “pressure from landlords” and refer to “tenants” rather than “rental persons.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “when,” “whether” and “if,” and the reader can generally follow your meaning. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in subject–verb agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence boundaries. Examples include “a person buy” and “he become,” “he doesn't has,” “we stays,” and “many middle class persons doesn't have.” There are also punctuation and capitalisation problems, such as “which” beginning a sentence after a full stop and lowercase “i.” Some longer sentences combine several ideas without clear grammatical control. Practise checking each clause for a clear subject and correctly formed verb, and use full stops to separate complete ideas.
