IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In recent years, renting home has become increasingly common in many parts of the world. While this development has both positive and negative aspects, I believe that it is predominantly a positive development. This essay will explain the main reasons for my position.

The primary reason why I consider this to be a positive development is that nowadays people wants to save money. This is mainly because for their future aspects. For example, they sucure a god amount of money for their children's study. As a result, they cannot affort to buy their own house. Another significant benefit is that the price of land, which can demotivate the people who wants to buy home.

Another important factor supporting my view is that the price of raw materials which are used in construction. like steel rod, cement, concrete etectera. In other words, like steel rod, cement, concrete etectera. For instance, if anyone have a plan to buy a house he r she can't affort this . Consequently, they rent a house for living. Furthermore, they can save a lot of money by staying in renting house, which can build a huge asset. Therefore, I believe that this trend is beneficial overall.

In conclusion, although renting house rather than owning a home may have some drawbacks, I believe that it is

predominantly a positive development in my point of view. This is mainly because high price of raw materials and people wants to save money. Overall, the benefits of this trend are more significant.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You give a clear overall view that renting is beneficial, and you mention relevant reasons such as saving money and the high cost of land and construction materials. However, the response only minimally answers the actual question: it asks why owning a home is important in some countries and whether that situation is positive or negative, whereas your opening focuses on renting becoming common and calls that a positive development. The reasons you provide therefore do not explain why people value ownership, and the positive/negative judgement is not consistently tied to the situation described in the prompt. Develop the reasons for home ownership—such as security, investment, or cultural expectations—and evaluate that preference directly, supporting each point with a clear explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposting such as “The primary reason,” “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” makes the intended structure visible. However, ideas are not arranged coherently enough: the essay shifts from the importance of owning a home to the benefits of renting, without explaining that change in focus. The second body paragraph repeats the construction-material example (“steel rod, cement, concrete etectera”) and then restates the affordability point, so progression is limited. Some links, including “In other words,” introduce repetition rather than clarification. Build each paragraph around one distinct reason that answers the prompt, then use a specific explanation or example to advance it rather than repeat it.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “price of land,” “raw materials,” “construction” and “asset,” and the reader can generally identify your intended meaning. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, such as “save money,” “buy a house” and “rent a house.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including “sucure,” “affort” and “god amount,” which can make parts of the response difficult to understand. Some expressions, such as “future aspects” and “build a huge asset,” are not natural in this context. Work on accurate collocations and topic-specific wording, for example, “save for future expenses,” “afford to purchase a home” and “build long-term wealth.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the price of land, which can demotivate…” and the conditional example beginning “if anyone have a plan.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in basic sentence patterns and agreement. Examples include “people wants,” “anyone have,” and “they rent a house for living.” Articles and sentence boundaries are also problematic: “renting home” lacks an article, while “construction. like steel rod…” incorrectly separates a sentence and leaves the next fragment incomplete. These errors sometimes make the intended relationships unclear. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles and complete sentences, then check punctuation and use a few controlled complex structures to connect reasons and results.
