IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Owning is home rather than renting one is far more important and advantageous in some countries. In this essay, I will discuss the benefits of owning a home in a country and why it is important.

Having your own home brings you a sense of freedom, financial security and stability which is very crucial for everyone to lead a happy and contented life. It saves you from renting costs and monthly/ yearly contracts setup by landlords. With your own property you have the flexiblity and freedom to enjoy a peaceful lifestyle without any worries about leaving the city. Your home becomes a major financial asset that can be utlised for numerous plans.

Goverments are also keen for its citizen to own homes within the country as it helps in promoting the economic development, and financial growth of the country. To aid this purpose, goverments and banks offers various loans schemes so people get have a safe place to lead their lives. however, it's important to note that these schemes often includes interest charges by which the goverments funds are raised and benefits. Moreoever, there are few countries like Turkey that offers citizenships to international or non-residents if they are willing to invest in the properties of their country. Buying and living property is one of the easy route to acquire residence permits and nationality in few countries.

As far as I am concerned, I believe owning a home has several benefits. Financial stability is one the crucial aspects in everyone's life. Therefore, by owning a home one is financially secured, stable and gets saved from hassles that people on rents have to face. These issues includes monthly rents, extra utilities expense, temporary rental contracts and more.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both the reasons home ownership matters and whether it is positive, and your position is clear in the final paragraph: you believe it has several benefits. Relevant points include financial security, freedom from rental contracts, government support, and investment-related citizenship. However, the positive/negative judgement is not stated clearly until the conclusion, and the discussion of government loans and citizenship is not fully connected to why ownership is important to ordinary residents. Several claims, such as owning a home ensuring a peaceful lifestyle or financial stability, are asserted rather than explained or supported. Develop fewer points with specific reasoning, and make your overall evaluation explicit in the introduction as well as the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion, and the ideas are generally grouped by topic. Linking phrases such as “To aid this purpose” and “As far as I am concerned” help signal relationships. However, progression is limited: the second body paragraph shifts from government policy to interest charges and then citizenship, so its central focus becomes unclear. The conclusion largely repeats the earlier claims rather than drawing the discussion together. Some connections are also awkward, including “however” after a full stop and the unclear reference in “by which the governments funds are raised and benefits.” Organise each paragraph around one main reason and use clearer links between claims and explanations.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “financial security,” “financial asset,” “economic development,” and “residence permits.” These choices show an attempt to discuss ownership beyond basic terms. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations reduce control: “flexiblity,” “utlised,” “Goverments,” and “citizenships” are noticeable, while “Buying and living property” and “hassles that people on rents have to face” are not idiomatic. Repetition of “financial stability” and “benefits” also limits variety. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for property and housing; more precise phrasing would make your ideas easier to follow without changing their meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including the relative clause in “which is very crucial for everyone” and the conditional clause “if they are willing to invest.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect fluency. For example, “governments and banks offers” should use a plural verb, and “these schemes often includes” has the same agreement problem. “It is one the crucial aspects” is missing a preposition, while “people get have a safe place” contains an incorrect verb sequence. There are also sentence-boundary and capitalization issues, such as beginning “however” after a full stop. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and building each clause around a clear verb.
