IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries it is very important to have own home rather than renting a home or apartment because it gives people more comfort and possession over where they lives. It is also an entity for future for every one who owns a house as the value of house increases by time and whenever they feel, they can easily sale it on bigger amount.

Owning a house also give inner peace and sutainability because no one is there for asking a rent or some amount for any type of damage. The house owner owns everything and with comfort he can do anything with his home and whenever he wants. He can more construct the house, paint it or even do gardening in spare space in house.

While renting has its own pons and cons as it is best for people or student who are far away from their home for the sake of studies or job purposes. They can easily transfer from one renting apartment to another without a single thought because they does not have anything to worry about. They just need to pack their luggage and move around anywhere. But the cons are they does not have any entity for future or for finantial purpose.

In my perspective, owning a home is very important now a days because it give you more comfort, peace and financial stability all the time. They does not need anyone permission to do anything with the house as its their own entity and they are the owner of the entity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that ownership offers comfort, control and financial security, and you clearly favour owning a home. The comparison with renting also gives a relevant reason why some people rent, particularly when studying or working away from home. However, the reasons for the strong importance placed on ownership in some countries are not fully explained; for example, you could discuss cultural expectations, housing security or investment traditions. Several points are asserted rather than developed, such as the claim that property values increase over time. The position is clear in the final paragraph, but the response would be more complete if it explained the country-specific context and supported its main reasons with fuller explanation or examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from reasons for ownership to the advantages and disadvantages of renting, then to your opinion. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and contrast markers such as “While” and “But” show the relationship between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes loose: the first paragraph combines comfort, control and resale value without clearly developing their links, while the final paragraph largely repeats earlier points. Connections between sentences can also be unclear, particularly where “the house owner owns everything” is followed by a list of possible changes. Use clearer topic sentences and develop one main idea at a time; more precise referencing and less repetition would make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial stability,” “renting apartment,” “damage,” and “transfer,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which makes parts of the response awkward or unclear. For example, “entity for future” does not naturally express an investment or asset, and “sale it on bigger amount” is not idiomatic. There are also spelling errors such as “sutainability” and “finantial,” alongside repeated use of “home,” “house,” and “comfort.” Aim to learn natural phrases for property and housing, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a contrast between renting and owning, but control is inconsistent. Subject–verb agreement errors occur repeatedly: “where they lives,” “Owning a house also give,” and “They does not have.” There are also problems with articles and sentence construction, as in “have own home” and “He can more construct the house.” Some long sentences join several ideas without clear grammatical control, which can make the meaning harder to follow. Practise accurate present-tense agreement and article use, and build longer sentences around one clear main clause. Proofreading each sentence for its subject and verb would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at varied structures.
