IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries, owning a home is considered more important than renting one. This is mainly because homeownership provides financial security and a sense of stability. In my opinion, although owning a house has several benefits, this situation can also have negative consequences due to the financial burden it places on individuals.

To start with , owning a home provides servals benefits and some people have to dream to build their Owen home and they do lot`s of hard and to purchase home , purchase house is a very big achievement, people wasting money on rent every month they pay 18,000 or more rent and some time they don`t have money and that time they face diffulty ,while land lord build some under rules and regulation and live under them and owning house have very advantage for example ,in current time real estate price incarse every day and purchasing house will be long term investment and becoming a homeowner is describe very high sates in society , also property ownership will get relief from future tension and buying home is now easy because government provide home loan with less interest rate so many people build their dream house .

To continue with ,in current time inflation is very high and every thing was very costly and this situation people can not afforded house , in my country most of people come from middle class family and in situation they can not think about that , while government provide house loan but people also can not afforded their Emi and in current time people have not security about their job so they can`t take that much big step .

In conclusion ,, people often value homeownership because it offers financial investment opportunities, independence and long-term security. , I believe this is a largely negative situation when owning a property becomes a social expectation, as it can place considerable financial pressure on individuals and limit their freedom to make other life choices.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain why homeownership is valued, citing investment, independence, security and social status, and you give a clear view that the expectation can be negative because of financial pressure. The opening and conclusion make your position easy to identify. However, some supporting ideas are less fully developed than others. For example, the point about rent payments and the landlord’s rules is difficult to follow, and the claim that property prices rise is not explained with a specific link to why people prioritise ownership. The discussion of unaffordable loans and insecure employment is relevant, but could be extended with a clearer example or consequence. Develop each main reason in a more focused way to make the response more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The first body paragraph mainly explains the appeal of ownership, while the second turns to affordability and employment insecurity, so the reader can follow the broad progression. However, the first body paragraph contains many ideas in one long, loosely connected sequence, making relationships between points unclear. Connectors such as “To start with” and “To continue with” signal stages, but are somewhat mechanical and do not clarify the logic within the paragraphs. Some references, including “that situation” and “under them,” are also unclear. Use shorter, focused paragraphs and link each claim to its explanation with precise referencing and transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “financial security,” “long term investment,” “social expectation,” “financial pressure” and “freedom to make other life choices.” These phrases help communicate the central argument. However, the range is limited by repeated basic wording such as “home,” “people” and “current time,” while numerous spelling and word-choice errors sometimes make meaning difficult to understand. Examples include “servals benefits,” “diffulty,” “incarse” and “high sates”; “build some under rules and regulation” is also an unclear expression. Aim for accurate topic vocabulary and natural collocations rather than adding more ambitious terms. Proofread spelling and choose precise phrases, such as “property prices are rising” and “meet monthly loan repayments.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use some simple sentences and attempt longer structures, including a contrast with “although” in the introduction and a conditional idea in the conclusion. These attempts show some range, and the main position is generally recoverable. However, many sentences in the body are difficult to process because clauses are joined without clear grammatical structure or punctuation. For example, “people wasting money on rent every month they pay 18,000 or more rent” lacks a clear finite clause, and “people have to dream to build their Owen home” has faulty verb patterns. There are also errors in articles, agreement and sentence boundaries. Build complex sentences around one clear main clause, then check verb forms, articles and punctuation.
