IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is preferred by people in some countries to own a home instead of renting. This can be due to the fact that buying home is associated with social status and gives a sense of accomplishment to the owner. I believe it is a positive development, as it is more secure and cost effective in the long run.
There are various reasons why people prefer to own their accommodation. People often associate owning a property with an elevated social status, especially in the current economy. Home owners are deemed more wealthy and sophisticated. As a result, individuals often aim to purchase a home. Another reason is that owning home gives a sense of accomplishment. To elaborate, as house prices are exorbitant, the general public has to save extensively to buy an accomodation. This results extreme budgeting and lowering standard of living. So, when they finally achieve their goal by purchasing an apartment or house, they feel that their hardwork has paid off.
In my opinion, owning your own accommodation is more beneficial than renting. To begin with, ownership of a property is more secure than renting a home. A person who owns their home does not have to worry accommodation. Renters often have to worry about being evicted by their landlords, which is not a issue of concern for the home owners. Moreover, owning a home is more cost effective than renting an apartment. Renters have to pay a certain amount every month or week to their landlords, whereas home owners do not have to worry about such things. If a person owns their accommodation, they can save a significant portion of their income, which can be invested in other sectors, providing them financial security in the long run.
To conclude, people like to own their home because it is related to social status and sense of achievement. In my opinion, it is a positive situation as it leads a more secure and financially stable life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the prompt and state a clear view: home ownership is positive because it offers security and can be more cost-effective over time. The reasons for its importance—social status and a sense of achievement—are relevant, and the explanation about saving extensively for a costly property gives one idea useful support. Your position is also supported with examples of eviction concerns and regular rent payments. However, some claims need more careful development: for instance, owners are said to be more “wealthy and sophisticated,” but this generalisation is not qualified or explained. The financial comparison also overlooks costs such as mortgage payments and maintenance. More balanced, specific support would make the argument more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining why people value ownership, a paragraph presenting your view, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “Another reason,” “To begin with,” and “Moreover” help readers follow the argument. This organisation is effective, though some linking is mechanical because several points are introduced with similar formulaic transitions. There are also places where the connection between claims could be clearer: the discussion of saving and a lower standard of living leads to achievement, but the relationship could be expressed more smoothly. In the final paragraph, “it” refers broadly to the situation rather than a specific benefit. Use more varied links and clearer referencing to strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “social status,” “sense of accomplishment,” “exorbitant,” “evicted,” and “financial security.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning remains clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “buying home,” “owning home,” “purchase an accommodation,” and “does not have to worry accommodation.” “Hardwork” is also incorrectly written as one word, and “cost effective” would normally be hyphenated when used before a noun. Repeated use of “home,” “own,” and “rent” limits flexibility. Aim for more natural topic collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “as house prices are exorbitant” and a contrast structure with “whereas.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles and noun phrases need attention: “buying home” should be “buying a home,” and “a issue” should be “an issue.” There are also missing grammatical elements in “does not have to worry accommodation” and “it leads a more secure…life”; these require “about accommodation” and “leads to a more secure…life.” The sentence “This results extreme budgeting” needs “in.” Review articles, prepositions, and verb patterns, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
