IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries people think that owning a home plays a vital role in financial stability and security rather than renting a home as rental houses are temporary accommodations and can create some challenges. From my perspective, owning accommodation is a positive situation.

To begin with, there are several reasons of having own home. Firstly, people buy own homes because it provides financial security as its their property and property always provides benefits. Secondly, they can live there as long as they want to. Moreover, they can live tension free as if they were accommodated in rental houses they have to pay for accommodation. Furthermore, owning home allows people the freedom to decorate according to choices.

I believe that, owning home is a positive situation as it provides a sense of stability and security to the residents. For instance, persons living in their own homes do not have to pay the rent of house, thus saving their money. On the other hand, it provides stability in terms of living and also results in less worries. It is also helpful in uniting a family and in maintaining healthy relations with neighbourhood.

To conclude, i believe that owning a home is more beneficial than renting homes in terms of stability, security and investment as buying homes is like investing money. Although, buying a house can create financial pressure but it also provides longterm benefits and it is a positive development

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you give reasons people value ownership, including financial security, freedom to stay, and the ability to decorate, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. However, the response is under the required 250 words, so the ideas have limited space to be explained. Several claims remain general: for example, “property always provides benefits” does not explain what those benefits are, and the point about family unity and neighbourhood relations is not supported. Develop fewer reasons with specific explanation or examples, and clarify the qualification that buying a house can create financial pressure. This would make your position and supporting ideas more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph giving reasons, a paragraph explaining your positive view, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Furthermore” help readers follow the list. However, progression is somewhat repetitive: financial security, stability, and reduced worries recur without being clearly distinguished, while the second body paragraph introduces family and neighbourhood benefits without developing them. Some linking is mechanical, and “On the other hand” does not introduce a contrasting view in that paragraph. Use clearer links between each reason and its explanation, and organise the body around distinct points rather than repeating similar benefits.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “financial stability,” “security,” “temporary accommodations,” and “investment,” so the main ideas are understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “reasons of having own home,” “tension free,” and “the rent of house.” Repetition of “home,” “own homes,” and “stability” also limits flexibility. Some word choices make the intended meaning less natural, as in “property always provides benefits.” Aim for accurate collocations and more precise language when explaining financial advantages, housing security, and costs. Proofread spelling and word forms, including “longterm,” to improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional construction (“if they were accommodated in rental houses”) and a concession (“Although, buying a house can create financial pressure”). Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors occur in basic sentence patterns and punctuation. Examples include “people buy own homes because it provides,” where the subject and pronoun do not agree, and “its their property,” which has an incorrect form. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “own home” and “the rent of house.” The final sentence beginning “Although” is incomplete as written, and commas are sometimes misplaced. Practise accurate article use, agreement, and complete complex sentences before adding further complexity.
