IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadys, in some countries owning the home is considered more reliable the renting one. This is because people want some security and a permanent place to live. In my opinion, this is positive development, although it has some disadvantages.

There are the several reasons why people wants to own the home rather than the rent. The main reason of owning home is security and stabilty. Home owners donot think about the landlord will say leave the place or increasing the rent. Furthetmore, the house price should increase in value over time. For example, if the the person who is buying the home in young age and then sell it in the future, he will earn more money and became financial stable and very delighted for their achievement.

I believe this is positive situation because owning a home can long term financial benefits and emotional satisfaction. People can decorate their according to their preferance without asking from the permission of landlord. Moreover, having a permanent home can help family to live together and feel settled and more comfortable. However, buying a expensive home and some people may have loan from bank. This can create financial pressure for those with low income. Therefore, people should consider their financial circumtances prior to making a such a major investments.

In conclusion, people prefre to own house because they provide seurity, stability and financial benefits. From my percepective, this is the positive development, provided that people can purchase to own the house wwithout experiencing serious financial difficulties.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain that people value home ownership for security, stability and possible financial gain, and you clearly state that you see it as positive, while acknowledging the risk of debt for lower-income buyers. The example of buying young and selling later helps extend the financial-benefit point, and the conclusion restates your position consistently. This fits the descriptor because the response covers the task and supports its main ideas. To strengthen the development further, explain more precisely why ownership is especially important in some countries—for example, cultural expectations or limited rental security—and clarify that house prices do not always rise. This would make the reasoning less generalised and more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph evaluating the situation, and a conclusion. The progression from security and financial benefits to the possible burden of a loan is logical, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” “However,” and “Therefore” help signal relationships between ideas. Your position also remains consistent from the introduction to the conclusion. At times, however, the links feel formulaic, and some sentences are not smoothly connected—for instance, the shift from rising house prices to the example of selling later could be made more explicit. Use referencing and transitions more naturally, and ensure each paragraph develops one central point in a clearly connected sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “security,” “stability,” “financial benefits,” “emotional satisfaction,” and “financial pressure.” These choices make your main meaning understandable, and you attempt some topic-specific phrasing. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word combinations are noticeable, such as “stabilty,” “preferance,” and “financial stable.” Some expressions are also awkward or imprecise, including “owning the home” and “the house price should increase in value.” These issues limit the range and naturalness of your vocabulary, even though the ideas can generally be followed. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common collocations as complete phrases, such as “achieve financial stability” and “property values may rise.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional example (“if the person…”) and a concession in the introduction (“although it has some disadvantages”). The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles and verb forms are frequent enough to affect fluency. Examples include “people wants,” “Home owners donot think about the landlord will say leave,” and “owning a home can long term financial benefits.” The sentence beginning “However, buying a expensive home and some people may have loan from bank” also joins ideas in an incomplete, confusing structure. Practise building complete clauses with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and article use before adding more complex structures.
