IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In some countries it is belived that owning a house is better rather tha renting one. It is considered important to have a place of their own.
I believe this is a postive situation according to me because, generally in my country if I am being particular owning a house is considered to be a sign of stability and prosperty. In some countries it is also simillar case where people own a property but on the other hand some of them prefer to rent the place. People with government jobs mostly preffer to rent or they are provided with the staff quaters due to the reason of job transfers.
Hence it makes sense to rent a place rather than owning because the job location keeps on changing and it is not convinient to buy a house shift there and again relocate to other location.
I still strongly believe it to be a positive situation because owning an house gives you a sense of security. If any changes are required in the house it can be done without worrying as it is owned by themselves. Owning a house gives a personal space as well. There are no restrictions regarding the choice of diet because there are circumstances where people living on rent are denied to have certain diet choices in my country specifically.
To conclude I would say that owning a house is what I would personally prefer as you get to security, freedom and personal space without the intrusion of any outsider.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a clear view that home ownership is positive and offer relevant reasons, especially security, freedom to make changes, and personal space. You also explain why some people rent, using job transfers as an example. However, the response does not fully develop why owning a home is important across countries: the claim that it signals “stability and prosperty” is asserted rather than explained, and the discussion shifts between your country and other countries without clarifying the broader reasons. The contrast with renting is useful, but some points—such as restrictions on diet—need clearer explanation and support. Develop each main reason with a specific explanation or example, and keep the focus on answering both parts of the question.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an opening, discussion of renting and ownership, and a concluding preference. The ideas about job transfers and the benefits of owning are relevant, and connectors such as “Hence,” “on the other hand,” and “To conclude” signal relationships. However, progression is not consistently clear: the paragraph beginning “I believe this is a positive situation” moves between your personal view, general claims, and the renting example, while “Hence” introduces a point that does not clearly follow from the preceding sentence. The conclusion repeats the preference without drawing together the reasons. Use clearer paragraph roles—one for why ownership matters, one for your evaluation—and make links between claims explicit rather than relying mainly on transition phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “stability,” “security,” “personal space,” “job transfers,” and “restrictions.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “a sign of stability” and “sense of security.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “belived,” “postive,” “prosperty,” “simillar,” and “convinient,” and some word choices or collocations are awkward: “staff quaters,” “diet choices,” and “get to security” do not sound natural in context. Repetition of “owning a house” and “place” also limits range. Check spelling carefully, learn common housing collocations, and vary repeated terms with accurate alternatives such as “home ownership” and “property.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, for example the sentence explaining that job transfers make renting practical and the conditional sentence beginning “If any changes are required.” Most ideas remain understandable, but grammatical control is inconsistent. Examples include “rather tha renting,” “a place of their own” after a singular subject, “owning an house,” and “as you get to security,” where articles, agreement, or sentence construction are faulty. Some sentences also run together or use punctuation awkwardly, particularly the long sentence beginning “I believe this is a postive situation according to me because.” Aim for more controlled sentence boundaries and check articles, subject–verb agreement, and complete grammatical patterns. Accurate simple sentences alongside carefully built complex ones would make your meaning clearer.
