IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In few countries, owning a home is considered more important than renting one. There are several reasons for this preference, including financial security and the desire for stability. In my opinion, this is generally a positive situation, although buying a house can create financial pressure.

One major reason why people prefer to own a home is that its provides long-term security. People who own their house do not have to worry about their lanlords increasing the rent or asking them to leave. This allow families to live comfortably and buil a stable life. Another important reason financial investment. Instead of paying rent every month, homeowners can gradually build their own assests. In the future, they may also benefit if the value of their property increases. for these reasons, many people consider owning a house an important achievement.

I believe this is mostly a positive situation because home ownership can provide both financial stability and emotional satisfaction. people often feel more secure when they have a permanent place to live. Furthermore, homeowners can decorate or renovate their houses according to their preference without needing permission from a landlord. However, purchasing a property is expensive, and some people may need to take out large loans. As a result, they may experience financial stress, particularly if they lose their jobs or struggle to make repayments. Therefore, people should consider their financial circumstances before buying a house.

In conclusion, people prefer owning homes because it offers security, independence, and long-term investments. Although, purchasing property can be financially challenging, I belive the benfits generally outweigh the disadvantages, provided that people can afford it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: it explains the appeal of home ownership through security and investment, and clearly states that it is generally positive while acknowledging financial pressure. The position remains consistent from the introduction to the conclusion. Supporting details such as protection from rent increases, the ability to decorate, and the risk of loan repayments make the discussion relevant and reasonably extended. To strengthen the response further, develop the reasons with more precise explanation rather than relying on broad claims—for example, explain how owning property can build financial security over time, or why stability matters particularly to families. The disadvantage is acknowledged, but could also be explored in more depth.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay is organised clearly into an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph evaluating the situation, and a conclusion. Ideas progress logically, and linking expressions such as “Another important reason,” “Furthermore,” “However,” and “As a result” help show relationships between points. The conclusion also returns to the main position. This is effective overall, though some transitions feel formulaic, and the reference “for these reasons” could connect more smoothly to the preceding investment point. The second body paragraph combines emotional benefits, independence, and financial risk; clearer grouping or a more explicit transition between these aspects would make the progression even easier to follow. Aim for cohesive links that guide the reader without relying mainly on signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for discussing the topic, with useful expressions such as “long-term security,” “financial stability,” “emotional satisfaction,” and “financial stress.” These show some range and help communicate the argument clearly. There are also attempts at more specific language, including “renovate” and “repayments.” However, spelling errors and some imprecise or awkward choices reduce control: “lanlords,” “assests,” and “benfits” should be corrected, while “build their own assets” and “long-term investments” could be expressed more naturally in context. The phrase “its provides” is a grammar issue rather than a vocabulary one. To move higher, use a broader range of precise collocations and check spelling carefully, especially in key topic words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including relative clauses (“People who own their house…”) and a conditional clause (“if they lose their jobs”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the contrast between benefits and drawbacks is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, however: “its provides” should be “it provides,” “This allow families” should be “This allows families,” and “Another important reason financial investment” needs a verb, such as “Another important reason is financial investment.” There are also missing sentence-initial capitals in “for these reasons” and “people often feel,” and the opening “In few countries” needs an article or a different construction. Greater accuracy in agreement, sentence completeness, and capitalization would improve control while retaining the current range of structures.
