IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In the present, owning an asset in abroad becoming a trend, also people were seems to be more interested into buying a home rather than renting the place because it has several benefits and also it could turn into wonderful future investment. I will discuss about more in the below paragraph with an example.
On the first hand, majorly in western countries the person has a good amount of owning capacity because they get higher paychecks. Secondly, mostly an immigrants have different scenarios but in some terms such as H1-B visa holder can easily buy a house and it gives many positive sides. For example, the house becomes an great asset, a person can stay freely without any type of hesitation or else they can give the apartment on rent if they want(side income). Also, the standard of living can be upgraded. Furthermore, there are many small advantages or positive aspects in terms of buying a home rather than renting.
On the other hand, the most negative side of owning the house is morgage we have to pay every month becomes harder to manage with other expenses. While buying the home people needs to be focused on paper works because sometimes it could be a fraud real estate schemes. In addition, to maintain the house becomes very difficult if the owner is already has a burden of a loan, bills, maintainence, water supplies etc.. So far, it is difficult to maintain a owned house.
To conclude, I think owning a home is quite good decision when a person has good amount of capacity to own assets then it will be considered as a perfect upgrade for the future but it will become much harder if the person does not have enough funds or they do not have capabilites to maintain it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you suggest that home ownership offers an asset, a place to live without the uncertainty of renting, and possible rental income, then discuss mortgage payments and maintenance as drawbacks. Your conclusion gives a clear, conditional view that ownership is positive when a person can afford it. These relevant points support the response at this level. However, the reasons why owning a home is especially important in some countries are not fully explained; the reference to higher paychecks and H1-B visa holders is narrow and not clearly connected to the broader question. Several benefits and drawbacks are listed rather than developed with explanation or examples. To strengthen the response, explain the social or financial reasons behind the preference and extend fewer points in more depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates your position. This makes the main direction easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Secondly,” “For example,” “Furthermore,” and “On the other hand.” At times, however, these links feel mechanical or do not show the relationship between ideas precisely. The opening paragraph promises an example, but the discussion does not clearly fulfil that promise, and the advantages paragraph moves from immigrants to rental income and living standards without a strong progression. Improve cohesion by grouping related points, using clearer references, and explaining how each example supports the main idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “asset,” “investment,” “mortgage,” “expenses,” and “standard of living,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “side income” and “real estate schemes.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “owning capacity,” “interested into buying,” and “perfect upgrade for the future.” Spelling errors such as “morgage,” “maintainence,” and “capabilites” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural phrases used in housing discussions, and check spelling carefully. A wider, more precise range of collocations would help you express the financial and social reasons more clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional idea in the conclusion and a contrast introduced by “On the other hand.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors make sentences awkward or unclear. For example, “people were seems to be” combines incompatible verb forms, while “an immigrants have” has an agreement and article problem. In “the owner is already has a burden,” the verb pattern is incorrect, and several sentences lack clear grammatical structure, particularly the opening. Work on subject–verb agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. Building accurate shorter sentences first, then adding subordinate clauses, will help you show range with better control.
