IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many people in some countries are preferring to own a house rather than renting it. There are numerous reasons for this case and I firmly believe that it is negative development over a positive impact.

To begin with, the reason for owning a house is to avoid paying rent, and to save money. By owning a house one can avoid the financial burden of paying rent, and hence it helps to save money and invest it. Besides this, having a house will help one to build financial stability or an asset which can be helpful for future needs. To elaborate, in India the majority of people prefer to own a house because for them house is their biggest asset whose value increases with time. Therefore, having such type of thought make one to buy house.

On the other hand, this brings many negative impacts. Firstly, buying or owning a new house may create a financial burden for the majority of people who are unable to pay their mortgage on time. This creates a situation of continuous stress and anxiety. Apart from this, there are many cases where renting a house is a better option. People who are below poverty line can avoid financial burden like mortgage repayment by renting a house. This helps them to decorate their home according to their choice by building their dream home without purchasing it. Hence, one can avoid such type of thing and live a happy life.

To summarize, owning a house is important as it helps to gain financial stability and save money by avoiding rent payment. However, I contend that negative effects are more such as financial burden of mortgage repayment which leads to stress and anxiety.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain that people may buy homes to avoid rent and build an asset, and you clearly judge the trend negatively because of mortgage-related stress. The India example gives the first reason some support. However, the explanation of why home ownership is important in some countries could be more specific, and the claim that a home’s value increases over time is presented broadly without qualification. Your discussion of renting for people below the poverty line is relevant, but the point about decorating a rented home does not clearly support your argument about the effects of home ownership. Develop each main idea with a more direct explanation or example to make the response more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph presenting drawbacks, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “To summarize” helps readers follow the main stages. Within paragraphs, however, some links are mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always clear. For example, the point about decorating a rented home follows the discussion of poverty and mortgage costs but does not explain how it supports the argument. References such as “this” and “such type of thing” are also vague. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and make each paragraph progress through one clearly developed line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “financial burden,” “financial stability,” “asset,” “mortgage repayment,” and “stress and anxiety.” These choices make your main ideas clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or repetitive: “negative development over a positive impact” is unclear, while “such type of thought” and “such type of thing” are vague. “Build their dream home” also suggests constructing a property rather than making a rented home feel like their own. Aim for more natural, precise phrasing and vary repeated references to houses and financial effects. These improvements would make your argument sound more fluent without changing its meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the conditional structure “People who are below poverty line can avoid…” and the relative clause “whose value increases with time.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “many people … are preferring” is an awkward tense choice for a general trend, “having such type of thought make” has subject–verb disagreement, and “buy house” is missing an article. There are also article and number issues in “below poverty line” and “negative development.” Review agreement, articles, and verb forms, and check sentence patterns when expressing general truths. Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen the response.
