IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In many countries owning a home rather than renting one is very implortannt for people because in my opinion, they think owning a home rather than renting one is positive siyuation . If we buy a home insant of staying in rental home. we can stay fareely, comfortable if we have our own home. It is quite difficult to saty in renting one under other rules and regulation.

It's kind of investment, because staying in renting one need to pay over time . Compared to fanancial also owning a home is better positive situation, we pay at first and don't need to pay weekly or monthly like renting one. instate of giving anyone money may you collect and save for own home. On your own home we can make rules by ourselves , do whatever we want it doesnot distrub anyone. owining a own home makes our life so flexible and reyable.

It doesnot mean that renting one is bad, if is it accaptable to saty with someone else sharing same home, if you can comprmise and stay in same rulesand regulation it would to good at renting one also. owning your own will be perfect investment if you can offer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You give a clear view that home ownership is positive and offer relevant reasons: greater freedom from a landlord’s rules, flexibility, and the possibility of treating a home as an investment. You also briefly acknowledge that renting can suit people who are willing to share and compromise. However, the reasons are only minimally developed, and the response does not fully explain why owning a home is especially important in some countries. The response is 182 words, below the 250-word minimum; 18 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Develop each reason with an explanation or example, and make the country-specific context clearer to address both parts of the question more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: it introduces the topic, gives reasons for ownership, and then recognises that renting may also be acceptable. This gives the reader some sense of direction. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and several ideas are joined in ways that make their relationships unclear, such as “Compared to fanancial also owning a home is better positive situation.” The repeated contrast between owning and renting also makes the discussion feel circular. Use clearer topic sentences and organise each paragraph around one reason, then explain it. More accurate linking and referencing would help the reader follow how each point supports your overall view.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use basic vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “investment,” “rules and regulation,” “flexible,” and “compromise,” so the main ideas can generally be understood. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or inaccurately formed, including “better positive situation,” “staying in renting one,” and “owning a own home.” Numerous spelling errors—such as “implortannt,” “siyuation,” and “fanancial”—also strain the reader and reduce clarity. Aim for more precise housing and financial vocabulary, and check spelling and collocations carefully. For example, describe the costs of renting as “ongoing rent payments” and explain that ownership can provide “greater independence.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt some longer sentences and use clauses with “because” and “if,” but most structures are simple, and errors are frequent enough to make parts of the response difficult to follow. Examples include “If we buy a home insant of staying in rental home. we can stay…” (a sentence fragment and faulty punctuation), “if is it accaptable,” and “owning your own will be perfect investment if you can offer.” Articles, sentence boundaries, and clause construction need particular attention. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use a mix of simple and compound forms accurately before attempting more complex structures. Proofread for capital letters and full stops as well.
