IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some countries, people often buy a new home rather than living in a renting home. Many individual have different perspective. This case is because they felt more stress free in their own house rather than rented one. I think it is positive situation because buying a home is life time investment and the head of the house will have no other tension.

Numerous people prefer to own a home due to several reasons. Initially, Owing a home is consider as a secure investment. Since, the renting charges tends to increasing day by day the people living on rent cannot affort the increased expenses. They may lose their residence due to higher rents. While, owning a property is a better investment because the owner can pass their personal properties to their children. In many communities, owning a home is associated with maturity, family responsibility and success, and young adults, especially those about to marry, may feel judged if they continue to rent.On balance, I believe this situation has more advantages than drawbacks. Owning a home encourages long-term saving and gives families a stable environment in which children can grow up and attend the same school for years. Homeowners are also more likely to take care of their neighbourhoods, which strengthens community bonds. However, the downsides should not be ignored. When ownership is seen as essential, people may take on heavy mortgages or borrow beyond their means, which can lead to severe financial stress. In addition, high demand can push prices beyond the reach of low-income earners, deepening inequality and limiting the mobility of workers who might otherwise move to find better jobs.In conclusion, the desire to own property stems from the need for security and from social expectations. Although it promotes stability, it becomes harmful when people are pressured into unaffordable debt, so a balanced approach that makes both buying and renting viable would be ideal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response addresses both parts of the question and maintains a clear overall view: home ownership is generally beneficial, but pressure to buy can create financial harm. The reasons are relevant and varied, including security, rising rents, inheritance, social expectations, and family stability. The discussion of mortgages and reduced worker mobility also gives the evaluation useful balance. This is a strong response, though some points are asserted more than fully explained. For example, the claim that owners have “no other tension” is broad and not supported, and the opening reason about feeling “more stress free” is not developed as clearly as the later points. Explaining how security or social pressure affects people would make the ideas more consistently extended and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure, moving from an introduction to reasons, an evaluation, and a conclusion. The final paragraph effectively brings together the benefits and drawbacks, and transitions such as “On balance,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal the argument. However, the progression is uneven: the paragraph beginning “Numerous people prefer” combines financial security, inheritance, and social expectations, then shifts directly into the evaluation without a clear paragraph break. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, as in “Initially” and “Since” followed by a fragment-like construction. Clearer paragraphing—separating reasons from the positive/negative evaluation—and more precise links between claims would make the organisation easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

There is an adequate range of vocabulary, with some effective topic-specific expressions such as “secure investment,” “family responsibility,” “heavy mortgages,” “financial stress,” and “deepening inequality.” These choices allow the response to discuss both social and economic aspects of the issue. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “living in a renting home,” “renting charges,” “affort,” and “personal properties” are not natural or accurate in context. “No other tension” is also an imprecise way to describe the benefit of ownership. The response therefore shows attempts at more formal vocabulary, but needs more consistent control of common collocations and accurate spelling to express ideas smoothly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses and contrast structures: “Although it promotes stability, it becomes harmful when…” is a clear example. Most ideas remain understandable, and the later sentences show some control of longer structures. However, some grammatical errors occur, particularly with agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. For example, “Many individual have” should use a plural noun and verb, while “I think it is positive situation” needs an article. The construction “Since, the renting charges tends…” is punctuated and structured incorrectly, and “children. In many communities” needs a space after the full stop. Greater accuracy in these patterns, alongside the existing sentence variety, would strengthen the writing.
