IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In several countries owning a home rather than renting one is crusial for individuals. This is because it can reduce responsibilities. I personally believe it is a positive situation.
On the one hand, owning a home in some countries is very important to people which I think is a positive situation because it can reduce the responsibilities of rent and to take care of the home. if a person own a house he can do whatever he want and could decorate it by flowers, painting, pictues and can make changes wherever he want.A person would not have the pressure of giving the rent at the end of the month. For instance to gain the advantages owning the house can motivate a person to work hard and achieve his goal.
On the other hand, owning a home could be usless or less important because we should not invest a large amount of money in owning a house.Instead of investing it in the house we should invest the money in the buisness which could generate profit and could be used in every part of the life.In contrast, spending a large amount of money on owning a house can be some times use and the money should be invested in buisness to improve the life.
In conclusion we should own a home rather the li

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You give a clear opinion that home ownership is positive and offer relevant reasons, including greater freedom to decorate and avoiding monthly rent. You also introduce a counterargument about investing money in a business. However, the explanation of why ownership is especially important in some countries is not developed, and the business point is repeated rather than fully explained. The conclusion is cut off at “we should own a home rather the li,” so the final position is not completed. The response is 213 words, below the required 250; the nine words copied from the task prompt are excluded from that count. To strengthen the response, explain the social or financial reasons behind the preference and develop each main point with a clear example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs and an attempted conclusion, and “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” signal a contrast. These features give it some basic organisation. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the first body paragraph combines freedom to alter a home, rent payments and motivation to work hard without showing how these points connect. The second paragraph repeats the idea of investing in business, while “In contrast” does not clearly introduce a contrasting idea. The unfinished conclusion also interrupts the overall structure. Use one central idea per paragraph, connect each supporting example directly to it, and use linking phrases only when their logical relationship is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “owning a home,” “rent,” “decorate,” “invest” and “generate profit.” Some phrases, such as “giving the rent” and “reduce the responsibilities of rent,” show an attempt to express financial benefits but are not natural collocations. Repetition of “owning a house,” “large amount of money” and “business” also limits the range, and spelling errors such as “crusial,” “pictues,” “usless” and “buisness” are noticeable. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the general argument, but more accurate spelling and more precise phrasing would make it clearer. Practise common collocations for housing costs and financial decisions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a conditional structure in “if a person own a house he can do whatever he want.” However, control is inconsistent, particularly in longer sentences. Subject–verb agreement errors occur in “a person own” and “he want,” and the sentence beginning “because it can reduce the responsibilities…” has an unclear grammatical connection to the preceding idea. Missing sentence-initial capitals and punctuation, as in “if” and “For instance,” also affect readability. The final sentence is incomplete, which leaves its grammatical structure unresolved. Build accuracy by checking agreement and sentence boundaries, and divide long strings of ideas into shorter sentences before attempting more complex structures.
