IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In various nations purchasing a house instead of renting one has significant value in people. It is okay to have a house of their own if there are not taking heavy loans and putting a burden on themselves. In this essay I will illustrate the cause of it,and whether it is good or bad in my opinion.
This is mostly because of their mindset. In most countries people have this belief that they should have their own house not because it is their need but to satisfy themselves.Like if their relatives come they cant taunt them that they dont even have their own house and in short cant call them poor.Secondly there are large families like joint families or a single family with multiple kids so it is their need to have house of their own because there are landlords who when are more paid can take you out of there house with one month notice and a person having job in that area or kids studiyng nearby disturbs their whole routine, therefore it is their necessity and not a choice.
In my opinion nothing is wrong in it until or unless you are taking loans from bank and people and you are wealthy enough that you can purchase it then there is nothing wrong in it and every person have a dream of owning a home of his own.But if someone do it in ego and dont even have a need of there own like a person who lives alone doesnt usually needs a home of his own so that can be wrong but overall theres nothing wrong in it.
To conclude people who are wealthy or have large families or even those having a dream of owning one should purchase it,but if you are not capable enough to buy one they should push themselves rather than taking loans,to summarise it is completely up to the person to buy one or rent it,in my opinion a person should have their own house by their money.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you suggest that home ownership can reflect social expectations and provide stability for families, and you give a qualified view that it is positive when affordable but unwise if it creates excessive debt. The example of landlords ending a tenancy and disrupting children’s schooling makes the practical reason relevant. However, the discussion of social pressure (“relatives… taunt them”) is not developed as fully, and the conclusion introduces the idea that people should buy a home “by their money” without resolving how this relates to your earlier acceptance of borrowing. Explain the reasons more clearly and support your overall judgement with a consistent distinction between affordable ownership and financially risky purchases.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph giving your opinion, and a conclusion. The progression from social expectations to family needs is understandable, and linking expressions such as “Secondly,” “therefore,” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “In my opinion nothing is wrong in it until or unless…” leads into a long sentence containing several contrasting points, while the conclusion repeats the affordability argument without clearly synthesising it. Use shorter units to separate each claim, and make references such as “it” and “one” more precise so readers can follow the argument without having to infer their meaning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “joint families,” “landlords,” “necessity,” and “burden,” and you attempt topic-related expressions such as “owning a home” and “taking loans.” However, the range is limited and several choices or combinations sound unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning less precise. For instance, “has significant value in people” is not a natural way to describe the importance of ownership, and “when are more paid” does not clearly express a rent increase. Informal wording such as “cant taunt them” also does not suit an academic essay. Build a more precise range of housing and finance vocabulary, and check collocations and spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional idea (“if there are not taking heavy loans”) and a relative clause about landlords. The main argument is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems make parts difficult to follow. Examples include “people have this belief that they should have,” “there are landlords who when are more paid can take you out,” and “every person have a dream”; these show problems with verb forms, clause construction, and subject–verb agreement. Several sentences also run together, particularly the opinion paragraph, where multiple clauses are joined without clear punctuation. Practise building accurate conditional and relative clauses, and divide long sentences so that each has a clear subject and verb.
