IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In the contemporary era, having an own house is very essential in this modern word. However, in numerous nations people prefer to live in renting house instead of purchasing an own house. In my opinion it is a negative development. This essay will discuss the reasons why people choose to live in rented home and also present the points of my opinion.
There are many reasons why individuals like to live in a rented house. Firstly, in a fast pace life people move to one city to another city in searching of better employment. Therefore they prefer to live in a rented house. Furthermore, individual's believe that live in a rented home is beneficial they think that they provide modern house with good aminities and people think have a own house require a lot of investments. Therefore, nowadays in most of the countires people like to live in a rented house.
There are many reasons justifying my opinion. To begin with, instability. People who do not have own house, they have to move from one home to another after sometimes. As a result, they do not have stable place to live. Furthermore, people who live in rented house have some restriction. They have to follow the rules and regulation of owner. Therefore, they cannot live freely they have to take care about everything in house, because anything can be broken then owner take extra money from renters. Thus, these are the disadvantages of live in a rented home.
To conclude, there are many reasons why some coutries follow this trend because of better job employment and it require less investment. However, this trend has negative effects like instablity of place and live in restriction zone.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You give a clear negative view and address both the reasons for home ownership preferences and whether this is positive or negative. The points about moving for employment and the investment required to buy a home are relevant, as are the disadvantages of renting, such as instability and restrictions imposed by landlords. However, the response only partially develops the task: the opening says people prefer renting, although the question asks why owning a home is important. This mismatch makes the explanation less focused. Several claims, including that rented homes provide modern amenities and that renters cannot live freely, are asserted rather than explained or supported with examples. Clarify why ownership is valued, then develop fewer points with specific explanation and keep the position consistent throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas are generally grouped by topic. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the essay. However, progression is weakened by the shift from the task’s focus on owning a home to an explanation of renting, and some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “There are many reasons justifying my opinion. To begin with, instability” introduces a fragment rather than a developed transition, while “Therefore” is repeated to connect ideas that do not always follow clearly. Improve cohesion by making each paragraph’s main point explicit and using pronouns and linking phrases to show precise relationships between claims.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “employment,” “investment,” “restriction,” and “instability.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “negative development” and “justifying my opinion.” However, the range is limited and several word choices, collocations and spellings are noticeably inaccurate, sometimes making the reader pause. Examples include “modern word” for “modern world,” “aminities,” “countires,” and “instablity.” Phrases such as “live in restriction zone” and “better job employment” are not natural in this context. Build accuracy by learning common collocations for housing and ownership, and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary would make the argument clearer without requiring unnecessarily complex words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures with “Therefore” and “As a result,” and a relative clause in “People who live in rented house have some restriction.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence construction, articles, agreement and verb forms. For example, “having an own house is very essential” and “individual's believe that live in a rented home is beneficial” contain faulty grammatical patterns; “they have to take care about everything” also has an incorrect verb construction. Some sentences run together, as in “they cannot live freely they have to take care,” which needs clearer punctuation or a conjunction. Practise accurate basic sentence patterns first, then add complex clauses while checking subject–verb agreement and article use.
