IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some parts of the world, people consider owning a home more important than living in rented accommodation. This is mainly because home ownership provides financial security and stability. I believe this is a positive development because it offers long-term benefits to individuals and their families.

There are several reasons why people prefer to own their homes. Firstly, residing in a rented property could result in low levels of confidence and encouragment, because people pays a lot of rents to remain there but their inner self esteem is hurted and they think we are paying off but someone's else property. They should have to pay rents every month, whereas owning a home may become a long lasting asset for their families. Secondly, rented properties can push people towards depression and stress as they are restricted by their landlord, and also there is a risk of increasing the amount of rent and that can also brings financial pressure and burden.

I consider this is a positive development as it offers too much benefits and play a vital role in humans weel-being. Owning a home can give its households a kind of security and the risk of putting them out from a rented home is also mitigated. Consequently, individuals can fulfill other requirements of the home by the money they had to give to their landlords while the value of their own home got increases day by day. Elderly people who are being retired can take and advantage to live in their own properties because they have limited resources.

In conclusion, owning a home is very important nowadays because due to inflation it can ease people and it can result in a long-term assets which they can leave for their children. It is totally a postive development as it provides security and a sort of financial freedom.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain why people value ownership, citing financial security, stability, and concerns about rent increases, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. The conclusion reinforces this position by mentioning inflation and leaving property to children. These relevant points meet the task well, but some are not fully explained. For example, the claim that renting damages confidence is asserted rather than supported, and the point about retirees having limited resources needs clarification. Your discussion of the benefits of ownership is stronger than your explanation of why it is especially important in some countries. Develop these points with clearer cause-and-effect reasoning and a specific example to make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph supporting your view, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Consequently” help readers follow the main progression. Your position also remains consistent. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear, particularly within the first body paragraph, where confidence, self-esteem, rent payments, and family assets are linked without a smooth explanation. The reference in “the money they had to give to their landlords” is also awkward because the sentence shifts between renters and homeowners. Use clearer topic sentences and make each sentence’s relationship to the previous one explicit; this would make the progression more flexible and easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial security,” “long-term benefits,” “financial pressure,” and “landlord,” and you attempt some less common expressions. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make ideas difficult to interpret. Examples include “low levels of confidence,” “their inner self esteem is hurted,” “too much benefits,” and “a long-term assets.” Several phrases are also unnatural, such as “take and advantage” and “the value of their own home got increases.” Aim for more precise, natural combinations and check spelling and word forms carefully. For instance, describe renting as offering “less security” rather than making an unclear claim about confidence, and use “financial burden” or “long-term asset” accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “whereas,” and “as,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction recur, limiting accuracy. For example, “people pays” should be “people pay,” “that can also brings” should be “that can also bring,” and “the value … got increases” needs a correct verb construction. The sentence beginning “residing in a rented property could result…” also shifts into “they think we are paying,” making the structure confusing. Work on keeping subjects and verbs consistent and building one clear clause at a time. Greater control of these patterns would make your complex sentences more effective.
