IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In some countries owing a house is considered to be far desirable than renting accommodation. This stems from the finacial perks of being a homeowner, as a property can benefit the owner in the long-run and is a far better option than paying rent indefinitely. In some cultures, owning a house is also considered a symbol of success, which puts a lot of pressure on people. In my opinion, this is a positive situation overall, however excess pressure creates financial consequences.
People look at owing a house with the financial security and long-term investment aspects of it. Property generally appreciates in value over time, making the house highly profitable in the long-run. Thus, homeowners can earn income from their house rather than having to pay rent every month. A house also provides a sense of security, with families being able to create better communal ties as well. Additionally, there is no fear of the homeowner increasing rent or terminating the contract while owning a house.
Furthermore, in cultures like Pakistan, owning a house is considered to be a status symbol. Being a homeowner is often connected with success and social status. For instance, my cousin bought a bigger house for his family in Lahore, just to be looked up to by our relatives. He didn't go for a smaller house which was in his budget, and had to borrow a loan. Thus, in certain cultures owning a house is considered a symbol of wealth.
To conclude, people prefer owning their own house for financial freedom it gives them, despite there being a lot of pressure to spend a high amount of money. Hence, I think owning a house is a positive situation for every homeowner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question: financial security and cultural status help explain why home ownership matters, and you clearly judge it positive overall. The discussion of property as a long-term investment and protection from rent increases is relevant, while the Lahore example illustrates the social pressure that can accompany ownership. However, the positive/negative evaluation is less fully developed than the reasons: the conclusion calls ownership positive “for every homeowner,” despite the example showing that borrowing beyond one’s budget can have financial consequences. Explain more directly when the benefits outweigh these risks, and qualify the broad claim that property generally appreciates. This would make the position more consistently supported and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs addressing financial and cultural reasons, and a conclusion. Paragraphs are focused, and signposts such as “Furthermore” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The first body paragraph moves from investment to communal ties and then rental security without explaining how these points relate, and “Thus” before the final sentence of the second body paragraph repeats the preceding idea rather than advancing it. The conclusion also introduces “financial freedom” without clearly resolving the earlier concern about excessive pressure. Use more explicit links between claims and examples, and make the final paragraph synthesize the argument rather than simply restate it.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “financial security,” “long-term investment,” “communal ties,” and “status symbol.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and attempts at more formal phrasing are evident. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “far desirable,” “financial perks,” “look at owing a house with,” and “earn income from their house,” which reduce naturalness. There are also spelling errors in “owing” where you mean “owning,” and “finacial.” Aim for more precise, conventional combinations and proofread spelling carefully. Greater consistency in using accurate collocations would make the vocabulary more flexible and convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “which puts a lot of pressure on people” and “while owning a house.” Most sentences are understandable, and punctuation generally helps the reader follow the argument. Some grammatical choices are inaccurate or awkward: “look at owing a house with” has an unclear construction, and “for financial freedom it gives them” needs a clearer relative structure, such as “for the financial freedom that it gives them.” The sentence beginning “In my opinion” also joins contrasting ideas with a comma before “however”; use a full stop or semicolon, or punctuate “however” appropriately. Continue varying sentence structures while checking clause links and punctuation.
