IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate about why being a home-owner is extremally important for people in some countries. For those people, owing a house means that they have security and in many cases, it represents social status. In my opnion, being able to have a house is a positive situation, because rental prices always increase and people can struggle paying for it.

In many places, owing a house gives people social status and security. Because houses are an expensive asset, people usually associate it with wealthiness. Addiotionally, rental houses are uncertain, because individuals can be asked to move out for different reasons, thus owing a place brings security. For example, in Queenstown, the average house price is over a million dollar, while the medium wage is around $35 dollars per hour. For this reason, people who own a house are often associated with wealthiness. On the other hand, rental places and be sold or owners can also decide to move back, living renters in a difficult position. For those reasons, owing a house is really important for many people.

In my opinion, it is positive for people to persue their dreams to buy a house. There are many situations where individuals can struggle with rent and owing a house can mitigate this issue. Rental prices, for instance, increases every year. That can pressure individuals who are strugging for different reasons. In New Zealand, retired people who need rent a place, often are not able to afford it because their pention do not cover the prices. They would not need to worry about it if they had their own house.

To conclude, some people believe that owing a home is important because it bring security, as well as social status. In my opinion, it is important to have a place to stay, especially to those in a difficult financial position.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain that home ownership can provide security and social status, and you clearly judge it to be positive. The Queenstown example and the discussion of retired people facing rent costs make the response relevant and give your position some support. However, the reasons are not equally developed. Social status is mainly asserted through the link between expensive houses and wealth, while the security argument and the benefits of ownership could be explained more fully. The conclusion restates your view but does not add much synthesis. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely why these factors matter to people and develop the consequences of owning versus renting with clearer supporting detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining why ownership matters, a paragraph giving your opinion, and a conclusion. The progression from reasons to evaluation is easy to follow, and signposts such as “In my opinion,” “For example,” and “To conclude” help orient the reader. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. At times, however, linking is mechanical or the relationship between ideas is unclear. “On the other hand” introduces another risk of renting rather than a contrasting viewpoint, and “For those reasons” repeats the preceding point without advancing it. Some references, such as “That” after the sentence about rising rental prices, could be more explicit. Use transitions that show the precise relationship between ideas and connect examples more directly to the claim they support.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “security,” “social status,” “asset,” “rental prices,” and “afford it,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “mitigate this issue.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “extremally,” “opnion,” “wealthiness,” “Addiotionally,” and “pention” appear in the response. Some combinations are also unnatural, including “owing a house” and “medium wage”; these choices can distract the reader even when the intended meaning is recoverable. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. A more controlled range of topic vocabulary would help you express the distinction between financial security, social prestige, and housing stability more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because rental prices always increase”) and a conditional structure (“if they had their own house”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the paragraphing helps make the argument accessible. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “rental prices … increases” should use a plural verb, and “it bring security” needs a singular verb. The construction “people who need rent a place” is also faulty, while “living renters in a difficult position” does not form the intended grammatical pattern. Review subject–verb agreement and verb patterns after “need,” and proofread sentence endings. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make your reasoning clearer.
