IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In some countries, it is very relevant for people to be a home owner rather than renting home. This occurs because people assume themselves secure and protective while living in their personal properties as they think that in this way they shall aware of the surroundings and well informed about the residents nature and their character. They wont let anyone to breach their privacy by entering their houses and also not allowing them to harm their property as they have full control of it. So they think that renting a home can impose serious outcomes as they have no control on many things. On the other hand, some people cant afford to rent a home and cant bear expenses of renting so they prefer residing in their own properties. And some people think that a home owner can only be a complete member of the society and he or she can only avail and capable of getting societal rights and those who used to live in a renting home wont get acceptance and respect as they stay only for a short time and has little impact on society. People also consider that by having their own homes they can be involved in taking considerable initiatives for the rules and regulation of the place where they live. My perspective in this dilemma is quiet obvious that it is everyone right to choose what they prefer for their living and we should think positively and stay happy in every situation. I believe that the place where we used to live whether it belongs to us or it is some sort of renting property, we should respect that place and follow the moral rights and stood in every bad situation with the society and should respect them in every matters.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the prompt by giving reasons for home ownership and stating a view. The reasons include feeling secure, protecting privacy and property, financial constraints, and gaining acceptance or influence in the community. These are relevant, but several are asserted rather than explained; for example, the claim that homeowners alone can be complete members of society needs clarification or support. Your position is also not fully clear: saying it is everyone’s right to choose is balanced, but “we should think positively” does not directly judge whether the strong preference for ownership is positive or negative. Make that judgement explicit, then develop it with a specific consequence or example to make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response contains a sequence of related reasons and uses signposting such as “On the other hand” and “My perspective” to indicate a shift. However, it is presented as one long paragraph, so the reader has little help distinguishing the reasons from your evaluation. Several ideas are joined in extended sentences, and the repeated use of “and” makes the progression feel like a list rather than a developed argument. References such as “they” and “those” can also be unclear when several groups have just been mentioned. Organise the essay into an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, and a paragraph giving your evaluation, with a conclusion. Use linking phrases selectively and make each paragraph’s main point clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “privacy,” “breach,” “societal rights,” and “initiatives,” and the general meaning is usually understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, which limits clarity: “very relevant” does not naturally express the importance of owning a home, and “residents nature” is unclear. Phrases such as “complete member of the society” and “moral rights” also do not convey your intended ideas precisely. Aim for common, accurate collocations before using more formal vocabulary, and check word forms and spelling. More precise language for security, community participation, and housing costs would help you explain your reasons more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “as,” and “while.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors recur in articles, verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “they shall aware” needs a verb such as “will be aware,” while “a home owner can only be a complete member” is followed by the mismatched “he or she can only avail and capable.” The final sentence also combines several clauses without clear grammatical control. These problems sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to follow. Practise building shorter, accurate sentences first, then combine them using subordinate clauses; check articles, subject–verb agreement, and consistent verb forms when editing.
