IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some countries, owning a home is more important than renting one. This is mainly because people want financial security and a stable place to live. In my opinion, this is generally a positive situation, although it has some disadvantages.

There are several reasons why people prefer owning a home, Firstly it provides sense of security because homeowners do not have to worry about monthly rent payment of being aske by landlords to leave. Secondly, a house is a valuable investment. Property prices may increase over time, helping people build wealth and secure their financial future. In addition, homeowners can decorate and renovate their property according to their preferences.

I believe this situation is largely positive because home ownership offers stability and independence. For example, family who own their homes can live in the same neighbourhood for many years, allowing their children to attend the same school and develop lasting friendships. Moreovet, owning a property provide financial security after retirement because people no longer need to spend money on rent.

However, there are some disadvantages. Buying a house is expensive, and many people nees long term loans to afford one. This can create financial stress, perticularly when interest rates rise or people lose their jobs. Furthermore, people who focus too much on buying a house may secrifies other important opportunities, such as travelling or persuning higher education.

In conclusion, people value homeownership because it offers security, independence and financial benefits. Although purchasing a property can cause financial pressure, I believe owning a home is generally positive if people make sensible financial decision.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the question: it explains why people value ownership, citing security, investment and freedom to personalise a home, and gives a clear view that this is generally positive despite financial drawbacks. The position remains consistent in the introduction, body and conclusion. Supporting examples, such as children staying in the same school and owners having less rent to pay in retirement, make the discussion relevant. To strengthen the response further, develop some points with more explanation: for instance, clarify how rising property values create security, or explain when the costs and sacrifices of ownership might outweigh its benefits. Overall, the main ideas are extended and supported, though some claims remain broad.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for reasons, benefits and disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates the position. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “However” and “In conclusion” help readers track the argument. This is a coherent arrangement, but cohesion is sometimes mechanical because several points are introduced through a list of sequencing words. There is also a punctuation problem in “Firstly it provides,” where a comma should follow the introductory word, and “Moreovet” appears to be a misspelled transition. To move towards more flexible cohesion, connect ideas through cause-and-effect links and clearer referencing rather than relying mainly on explicit signposts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to discuss the topic, and phrases such as “financial security,” “valuable investment,” “financial stress” and “lasting friendships” communicate relevant ideas. However, the range is not consistently precise, and several noticeable spelling and word-form errors weaken control: “aske,” “Moreovet,” “nees,” “perticularly,” “secrifies” and “persuning.” Some collocations also need refinement, including “monthly rent payment” and “make sensible financial decision.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but they make the writing less polished and can briefly distract the reader. Check spelling carefully and learn common topic collocations as complete phrases, rather than translating them word by word.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “although it has some disadvantages” and a relative clause in “family who own their homes can live…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “provides sense of security” needs an article, “family who own” needs a plural noun or matching verb, and “owning a property provide” has subject–verb disagreement. The final phrase “make sensible financial decision” also needs a plural noun or an article. There is an attempt at varied structures, but accuracy is uneven in articles, agreement and sentence punctuation. Proofread these patterns and aim to retain complex structures while checking each subject and verb.
