IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, the issue regarding owning or renting a home has sparked considerable debate. In some countries, people are preferring owning a home rather than renting one. This essay will examine, why this phenomena occurs and discuss the negative impact of it.

To begin with, there are several reasons why this phenomena is occurring. This is largely because landlord of the house made some strict rules and always interfering in the life of the tenant. The tenant's privacy is violated. For example, the owner of my flat always gives me a lecture about the rules of his house and sometime if I arrive late he started shouting at me. That is the reason, it's important for people to own a house in some countries.

On the other hand, this situation of owning a house rather than renting leads to destruction of fertile land. This means, if most people want to own a house, the housing sector always expands which uses more fertile land to build the house. It indirectly leads to the shortage of food in many places and rise in the price of the food. To illustrate if there are 10 people in and they all want their own house so they need land for making home which leads to the destruction of fertile land and causes the deforestation.

In conclusion, interfere of landlord in the renter's life is the main cause which leads more people to own a house in some countries. I think, this is a negative development which harms the nature as well as fertile land and causes the higher inflation in food sector.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain that landlord interference can make ownership attractive, and you clearly judge the trend negatively because of its effects on fertile land and food prices. These ideas are relevant, and the personal example about your landlord helps illustrate the first reason. However, the explanation of why home ownership matters is narrower and less developed than the discussion of its environmental consequences. The link from housing expansion to food shortages and inflation is asserted rather than fully explained, and the example about ten people is hypothetical and somewhat unclear. Develop the causes with a broader explanation, such as security, investment, or cultural expectations, and make the supporting reasoning more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the cause and your evaluation, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectations securely, and there is some evidence of more flexible organisation in the way you move from a cause to its example. However, links within paragraphs can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear—for example, “This means” does not specify exactly what it refers to, while “if there are 10 people in” leaves the setting incomplete. Use more precise referencing and connect each claim to the next with clearer logical explanation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main points, including “privacy,” “fertile land,” “housing sector,” “deforestation,” and “inflation.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “sparked considerable debate.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “this phenomena” should be “this phenomenon,” “interfering in the life” is unnatural, and “higher inflation in food sector” does not express the intended idea clearly. Repetition of “house” and “land” also narrows the range. Build a more accurate set of topic collocations and vary terms such as “home,” “property,” and “housing development.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional sentence (“if most people want to own a house…”) and a relative clause (“which uses more fertile land”). The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “people are preferring owning” (use “people prefer to own”), “the owner … started shouting” after the present-tense context, and “if I arrive late he started shouting,” where the tense relationship is inconsistent. Articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “landlord of the house” and “This means, if…”. Practise accurate verb patterns and tense consistency, and punctuate introductory clauses carefully; these changes would make your varied sentence forms more controlled.
