IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent times, there has been a globel trend in prefering owing a house rather than residing in a rented house. I would argue that this is a positive development because this helps people to construct and live in a house according to their wish. In addition house is a asset for future which serves as a private space for a

families.

The prime catalyst behind this mentality is people don't get a self satisfaction in living a rented house. Because the rented houses are not constructed according to our wish. Moreover, no one is allowed to makee an reformations in a rented house without the permission of the owner. This circumstance insist people to leave in such a condition leads to lack of mental courage in live in that house. Furthermore, most of the rented houses deny our decisions and privacy. For example, when I was a child I lived in a rented house. My parents always wanted to have a dog. Likewise, I wished to set up a garden at that house. However, the owner of our rented house did'nt allow us to buy a dog and set up a garden. Because the owner was concerned about the maintainence of his house. He worried that this practice wouls destroy his house. After that incident we decided to construct a home according to our desire where I could set up a garden and my parents could grow a dog. In addition to that, a house is always a asset for future. This will definetely contributes to our economy. On top of that, a property like house support people in taking loans and other government assistance. This own house acts as a finacial security which in total boosts the self confidence and courage among the people.

In conclusion, becaming a house owner is always better than residing in a rented house which provide an opportuinity to individuals to living in a private space which they dreamt off which also become a seet for the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you consider home ownership positive, and you address both why people prefer it and whether this is a good development. The explanation about personal choice is supported with a relevant example from your childhood, and you also mention privacy and financial security. This gives the response a solid, relevant foundation. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for instance, the claim that owning a house “boosts the self confidence and courage” needs a clearer link to financial security. The conclusion repeats the preference for ownership but does not draw together the main reasons. To develop the response further, explain the benefits and possible limitations more precisely and extend each key idea with a clear consequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has an overall structure: an introduction states your view, the main paragraph gives reasons and an example, and the conclusion restates your position. The childhood example also helps illustrate the point about restrictions in rented accommodation. However, the main paragraph contains several ideas—personal satisfaction, privacy, the dog and garden, and financial security—without clear separation, so the progression becomes difficult to follow. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, particularly the repeated use of “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “On top of that.” The sentence beginning “Because the rented houses…” is also left as a fragment, interrupting the flow. Use separate paragraphs for distinct reasons and make references such as “this circumstance” clearly identify the situation being discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “privacy,” “financial security,” “property,” and “reformations,” and the reader can generally understand your main ideas. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less clear. Examples include “globel,” “prefering,” “maintainence,” and “definetely,” as well as unnatural phrases such as “grow a dog” and “a seet for the future.” Some expressions are also imprecise, including “a house is a asset” and “support people in taking loans.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than more complicated wording: for example, say “raise a dog,” “an asset,” and “help people obtain loans.” Proofreading spelling and checking common word partnerships would improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use both simple and more complex forms, including a relative clause in “a house is an asset for future which serves as a private space” and a conditional-style explanation of the owner’s concerns. However, attempts at longer sentences are often faulty, and errors recur in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. For example, “a asset” needs the article “an,” while “This will definitely contributes” mixes incompatible verb forms. “The prime catalyst … is people don’t get” lacks a grammatical link, and “Because the rented houses are not constructed according to our wish” is a fragment. Work on complete sentence structures, subject–verb agreement, and consistent verb patterns; then check punctuation so that each sentence expresses a complete idea.
