IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

IT IS OFTEN ARGUED THAT IN SOME COUNTRIES OWNING A HOUSE IS MORE PREFERABLE BY INDIVIDUALS RATHER THAN RANTED HOME.I PERSONALLY BLIEVES THAT OWN RESIDENCE IS MUCH BETTER .THIS ESSAY WILL DISCUSS BENEFITS AND DRAWBACKS OF BOTH ASPECTS .

ON ONE HNAD PEOPLE BOUGHT OWN RESIDENCE BECAUSE THEY THINK THAT A PERMANENT HOSE IS MOST CONVIENT FOR THEM DUE TO MANY RESONS FOR EXAMPLE PEOPLE PREFER LONGTERM STAY AT SINGLE HOME ENHANCE NEIGHBOURHOOD COMMUNICATIONS.IN ADDITION THEY WANT TO STAY AT OPLACE NEAR TO THEIR CHILDREN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUES AND THEIR JOB LOCATIONS .MOROVER THEY CONSIDER OWN PROPERTY HAVE SIGINIFICANCE MEMORIES ABOUT THEIR ANCASTERS AND ABOUT THEIR OWN GOLDEN TIME .HOWEVER MANY THINK THAT TIME TO TIME CHANGE RESIDENCES IS VERY TOUGH TASK FOR THEM DUE TO HEAVY RENT ,RENEWAL AGREEMENTAND FEE LOAD .FOR HOUSEHOLD SHIFTING ALL ARE TIME CONSUMING PRACTICES .

ON OTHER HAND MANY HUMAN BEINGS CHOOSE TO STAY AT RANTED PLACES DUE TO THEIR OWN CONVIENCE FOR JOBS ,SCHOOLS FOR CHILDRENT .SIMILARLY MANY PERSON CONSIDER TO RENT A SHARED ROOM OR CABIN ACCORDING TO THIER FINICIAL RESOURCES .ANOTHER BIG RESON TO RANT A HOME RATHER THEN BOUGHT OWN HOUSE IS PRESENCE OF LESS INCOME RESOURCES INCLUDING THIS PEOPLE LIKE TO INVEST MONEY INTO BUSINESSES RATHER THAN OWNING HOUSE DUE TO ACHIEVED THEIR TOP POSITIONS GOALS.MEANWHILE MANY RESIDENTS NEEDS TO MOVE REGULARLY DUE TO THEIR TRANSFER ISSUES OR SOMETIME GO TO FORIEGN COUNTRIES FOR BUSINESSES OR TO MEET THEIR FAMILIES THATS WHY THEY MOSTLY ENCOURGE TOWORDS RANTING HOUSES IN CONTRAST TO BUY OWN HOME .

FROM MY PRESPECTIVE BOTH ASPECTS HAVE OWN VALUE NO ONE IS NEGELECTABLE THERFORE OWNING HOME OUTWEIGHT THE DRAWBACKS OF RANTING A HOUSE .IT MUST BE NECESSORY BY GOVERNMENT OF ANY COUNTRY TO MAKE REASONABLE ,COST EFFECTIVE POLICIES FOR CITIZENS WHICH HELP THEM TO OVERCOME RESIDENTIAL ISSUES.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you suggest reasons people value owning a home, including stability, community ties and proximity to schools or work, and you discuss why others rent, such as limited finances or needing to move for work. Your final view—that both options have value but ownership has advantages—is present, so the response is relevant overall. However, the reasons are not always clearly explained, and some points, such as memories connected with ancestors, are difficult to interpret. The discussion also shifts toward comparing renting and owning rather than directly evaluating whether the strong preference for ownership is positive or negative. State that judgement more explicitly and develop two or three reasons with clear examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs about owning and renting, and a concluding opinion. This gives the reader an overall route through the discussion, and phrases such as “On one hand,” “On other hand” and “From my perspective” signal the main stages. However, the links can feel mechanical, and several ideas within paragraphs are crowded together without clear explanation of how one leads to the next. For example, the paragraph on ownership moves from neighbourhood communication to schools and jobs, then to family memories and the difficulties of moving. Use clearer topic sentences and divide or connect supporting points more deliberately. Ensure references such as “both aspects” clearly identify the two choices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to housing and personal circumstances, including “permanent,” “neighbourhood,” “financial resources,” “transfer issues” and “residential issues.” This shows some range beyond basic terms. However, spelling and word-choice errors are frequent enough to make parts of the message difficult to understand, as in “ranted,” “convience,” “significance memories” and “achieved their top positions goals.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “heavy rent” and “encourage towards renting houses.” These problems limit precision even when the intended idea can be inferred. Build accuracy by learning common collocations for housing, costs and mobility, and proofread spelling carefully. Prefer familiar, correctly used expressions over ambitious phrases whose meaning is unclear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You make some attempts to use complex relationships, including explanations with “because,” “due to” and “rather than,” and the response includes both simple statements and longer sentences. However, control is inconsistent: errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning hard to follow. For example, “people bought own residence because they think” shifts tense and lacks an article, while “many residents needs to move” has subject–verb disagreement. Several long sentences also lack clear grammatical boundaries, particularly in the paragraph about renting. Practise building accurate sentences around one main clause, then add a reason or example. Check agreement, tense consistency and punctuation when editing.
