IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries, poeple prioritize purchasing their own homes than living in rented accommodation. In many regions of the word, houseownership is considered as a symbol of wealth and status, so this is the case. Although this trend has some pros, but I believe it is, on balance, a negative situation. This essay will explain both points of view.

Firstly, owning homes provide long term security. For example, in countries where mostly people live in rented accommodation, they have to change their place on and off due to certain circumstances, while those who live in their own homes, they live safely, without changing their housings. Secondly, it is a symbol of wealth and status in some countries. For instance, people in South Asia invest highly on building their own houses, as this the sign of their wealth. That's why, it is very important for people to own their houses, particularly in those regions.

Furthermore, there are several demerits of this situation. First, owning houses require a high capital cost. For example, those who earn low income, they can hardly manage to build their own house in whole life. Moreover, owning homes also reduce your mobility. This means you cannot leave your place easily because selling a property involves many rules and regulations to follow. The last, but the important one is the cost involve to maintain the infrastructure of your house, keeping it valuable for longer period of time.

In conclusion, people should decide owning a homes or living in rented accomodation based on

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: it explains why home ownership matters, citing security and its association with wealth and status, and gives a clear overall view that the trend is negative. The disadvantages—high initial cost, reduced mobility and maintenance expenses—are relevant. However, the explanation of why ownership is important is more developed than the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative; the conclusion is unfinished, so the position is not brought to a complete, reasoned close. Some examples, such as the general reference to South Asia, would be stronger with clearer explanation of how they support the argument. Develop the consequences of the disadvantages and complete the conclusion to make the response more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for reasons and disadvantages, and an attempted conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “For example” help identify the stages of the argument. However, some linking is mechanical, and the opening promises “both points of view” without clearly organising a balanced discussion. References such as “this is the case” are vague, while “The last, but the important one” is an awkward transition. Most importantly, the final sentence stops at “based on,” leaving the ending incomplete and weakening the overall progression. Use clearer links between each reason and the main position, and finish with a concise conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “rented accommodation,” “long term security,” “capital cost,” “mobility,” and “maintain the infrastructure.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and the writer attempts some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “prioritize purchasing … than,” “invest highly on,” “the cost involve,” and “keeping it valuable.” There are also spelling errors, including “poeple,” “word” for “world,” and “accomodation.” These do not generally prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Learn common collocations for housing and costs, and proofread spelling and word forms; for example, use “invest heavily in” and “maintenance costs.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is an attempt to use both simple and complex structures, including a contrast with “Although” and a relative clause in “those who earn low income.” The main meaning is usually clear, but some errors in agreement, sentence construction and articles remain. For example, “owning homes provide” and “owning houses require” need singular agreement (“provides” and “requires”), while “those who live in their own homes, they live safely” repeats the subject and creates a faulty clause. “Although this trend has some pros, but…” also combines two contrasting structures unnecessarily. The final sentence is incomplete, so it cannot demonstrate accurate control. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and clause boundaries, and vary complex sentences while ensuring each is complete.
