IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries, owning a home is considered much important than a rnting one. This is because people see property as a sign of financial security ans social ability. In my opinion, this is generally a positive situation, although it can crate some financial pressure.

There are several reasons why people prefer to own their homes.Firstly, owning a home provides a sense of security because people dont have to worry about landlords increasing the rent or ask them to leave. They can also make changes in theitr property according to their preferences. Secondly,a house is often considered a long term investment. property prices may increase over tie, allowing homeowners to benifit finanially in the future. For example, many families buy a hous when they are young and latwer use as a valueable assest for their children.

I believe that this preference for ownership is mostly positive. The main advantage is financial stability. once peple has paid off their mortage, they no longer have to spend large amount of moneyy on monthly rent.furthermore, owning a home can provide greater stability for families, particularly those with childrenbecause they can remain in the same neighbourhood for many years.

However, buying a home can also be dificuyllly for youngrsters because th eprices are very high. Some may have to take large loans and spend many years repaying them. Therefre, renting can sometimes be a more practical option for people who cannot afford to buy a house.

In conclusion, people prefer to own homes because of security, indpendence and the posibility offuture financial benefits.although home ownership can be expensive, I believe it is generally a positive development when people can afford it wutjout excessive financial pressure.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain ownership through security, independence and investment, then give a clear view that it is generally positive when affordable. The examples about avoiding rent increases and remaining in one neighbourhood make the benefits relevant. Your response also acknowledges the counterpoint of high prices and long repayment periods. To make the discussion more fully developed, explain the reasons behind the social importance of ownership more directly; the opening mentions “social ability,” but this idea is not explored later. The investment example is useful, though the claim about property prices rising would be stronger with a qualification or explanation. Overall, the position is clear, but some ideas are developed more fully than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, reasons for ownership, your evaluation, a contrasting point, and a conclusion. This makes the line of argument easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers identify each stage. The progression is generally logical, although the evaluation is split across two paragraphs and could connect more smoothly: the paragraph on advantages is followed by the affordability drawback without a clear transition explaining how this qualifies your position. Some linking is also mechanical, with several points introduced in a list-like way. Use referencing and transitions more flexibly, and ensure sentences are separated and punctuated clearly to strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial security,” “long term investment,” “monthly rent,” “mortgage,” and “financial pressure.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and there is some attempt to use less common language such as “neighbourhood” and “independence.” However, spelling errors are noticeable throughout, including “rnting,” “benifit,” “finanially,” and “indpendence,” which reduce the accuracy and polish of the vocabulary. Some word choices or forms are also unclear or unnatural, such as “social ability” and “a valueable assest.” Build a reliable range of topic-specific expressions and proofread spelling carefully; more precise collocations would help you express the ideas with greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because people don’t have to worry…”) and a conditional idea (“when people can afford it…”). Most of the argument remains understandable, and the sentence structures are generally suitable for the task. Some grammatical errors nevertheless occur, particularly with agreement, articles and sentence boundaries. For example, “once people has paid off” should use a plural verb, and “spend large amount of money” needs an article or plural form. Several sentences begin with lowercase words after full stops, and punctuation is often missing around clauses. Work on checking subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex structures accurately.
