IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In some countries owning a house is considered necessary as a permanent residentnce because it gives us many benefits in present and future life instead of renting a home. In my opinion, I storngly agree that owning a house provide us a permanent accommodation and we save oursleves from paying rent every month.
To commence with, a biggest advantage of own house is that we have our own space to live and we can maintain it according to our desires and taste. Moreover, we get rid off monthly rent. Therefore, accommodation in own house keep us stress free as compare to rental home. For instance, in own house we can do any thing as our needs and stay there for years no one can claim for it.
Another advanatage is, a symbol of status and prosperity. because owning a house shows that owner economic growth is well. A huge amount of money is needed for purchasing a home. Many people save money for a long time especially for buying a house.
On the other hand, renting a home always creates a stress of rent every month. Sometimes it become difficult to mange it with other expenditures. In addition, we are not able to do any permanent change without permission of owner. Therefore, renting house is stressfull for many people.
To conculde, I firmly believe that owning a house is benefical rather than renting because it keeps stress free from monthly rent and people can maintane it according to needs and also a symbol of status for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a clear opinion that owning a home is preferable, and you offer relevant reasons: it provides control over the living space, avoids monthly rent, and can represent prosperity. The examples about decorating a home and saving for a purchase help address why ownership matters. However, the response only partly develops the task. The reasons for why home ownership is especially important “in some countries” are not explored, and the status point is asserted rather than explained. The discussion of renting largely repeats the financial and control-related points instead of adding a distinct comparison. To strengthen the response, explain the social or economic factors behind this preference and develop each main reason with a specific consequence or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, two paragraphs supporting ownership, a contrast with renting, and a conclusion. Paragraphs generally have identifiable purposes, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For instance,” and “On the other hand” help show relationships between ideas. At times, however, cohesion feels mechanical, with several sentences beginning with “Therefore” or “In addition,” and some links do not clearly connect the ideas. For example, the status paragraph begins “Another advantage is” but then shifts abruptly to a sentence fragment about status. The conclusion also repeats the introduction and earlier points. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each explanation directly to the claim it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “permanent accommodation,” “monthly rent,” “status,” and “prosperity.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices, collocations, and spelling errors make the writing less natural and sometimes slow the reader. Examples include “get rid off monthly rent,” “owner economic growth is well,” and “stressfull.” Repeated use of “house,” “rent,” and “stress” also limits variety. Aim to learn common collocations for housing and finance, and check spelling carefully. More precise phrasing would help you explain the social and practical reasons for ownership without relying on repeated general terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because it gives us many benefits” and a conditional idea in “if we have our own space.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in agreement, articles, sentence boundaries, and verb forms occur often enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “owning a house provide” needs subject–verb agreement, while “accommodation in own house keep us stress free” has several grammatical problems. The sentence beginning “because owning a house shows…” is also incorrectly separated from the preceding sentence, and “Sometimes it become difficult” has an agreement error. Practise building accurate sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
