IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In many nations, individuals believe that ownig a house is far more beneficial and important than renting a home. Owning a house is a great investment which also create better image in the society, but for owning a home large sum of money is required to buy or build it. This essay will discuss about case and suggest wheather it is a positive or negative situation.
On the one hand, owning a home definitely creates a stonger positon in the community. Similarly, each and every person sholud have a home in their home town rather than in any other area. Nowadays, individuls has started building houses in theri home town to gain more respect and to make their family habe their own home. Similarly, a person migrated to other area living in a rented room also prefer to build home in there home town to make their family happy.
On the other hand, any individul who is residing in a different area for short period of time rents a place to stay as buying or building a home can be costly. Similarly, in metro cities like Mumbai cost of appartments and houses are too high any middle class individual cannot easily afford any of those. Hence, they chose to rent a home according to their time of stay and budget.
In conclusion, owning a home is quite good investment for future planning and ownig a personal possesion. I believe that the desicion of owning for renting dependds on the situation of individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both parts of the prompt: you suggest that home ownership brings social respect and security for family, and you give affordability and temporary residence as reasons to rent. Your view is only partly clear, however. The introduction says the essay will assess whether the situation is positive or negative, while the conclusion calls ownership a good investment but then says the choice depends on circumstances, without clearly judging whether the strong preference for owning is positive or negative overall. The reasons are relevant but remain general; for example, explain why owning a home creates respect or how it benefits families over time. A clearer, consistent position and fuller explanation of the main ideas would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting considerations, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the broad topic. However, progression within paragraphs is limited: the first body paragraph repeats the idea of owning a home in one’s hometown and family happiness without developing a distinct supporting point. Linking expressions such as “Similarly” are used repeatedly, sometimes where the next sentence adds an example rather than a parallel idea. The conclusion also does not clearly resolve the contrast established in the body. Use topic sentences that state each paragraph’s main point, develop it with a reason or example, and vary or reduce linking phrases so relationships between ideas are more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “investment,” “community,” “rented room,” “metro cities,” and “afford.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice or collocation problems make the writing less natural, such as “creates a stronger position in the community,” “make their family happy,” and “owning for renting.” Spelling errors are also noticeable, including “ownig,” “stonger,” “individuls,” and “appartments”; these reduce the accuracy and polish of the response. Build a more precise set of expressions for discussing housing, financial security, and social status, and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms. More accurate collocations would help your ideas come across clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrastive opening with “On the one hand” and a clause beginning “who is residing in a different area.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to interpret. For example, “Owning a house … also create” has subject–verb disagreement, while “each and every person sholud have a home in their home town rather than in any other area” is structurally unclear. Other problems include “individuls has started” and the incomplete construction “any middle class individual cannot easily afford any of those.” Practise agreement, articles, and complete clause structures, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb. Greater control of these basics will make your meaning more reliable.
