IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In several nations purchasing home rather than renting one is very beneficial for people. I think people should own home to secure their future and had property to stay worry free.

On the one hand, people rent home because sometimes they have to stay only for temporary time period. As some people like to change their home at certain period because they feel boring staying at one place for long time so they prefer home renting. Several individuals rent a property because they are not financially stable and do not have enough money to own it. But nowadays so many banks and financial companies provide home loans which supports middle-class families to own a home. They take loan and pay instalment as replace of rent and live in their own home.

Moreover, people who rent a home they just paying rent for uncertain period as they get nothing at the end. Whereas, people who paying instalment own a home one day. This is also good investment of money along with a securing home for future. Also, there are distinct advantages of owning home such as, they can make changes according to their test and they can live worry free. Meanwhile rented home can give stress of paying rent on time and also they can ask for leave home anytime. Moreover owner increase rent every year according to growing shortage of homes. And they have to follow stricter rules implemented by owner.

In conclusion, I agree that owning home is very important rather than paying rent for rest of the life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses both parts of the question: you suggest that people value ownership for future security and explain reasons some people rent, including temporary circumstances and limited finances. Your position is clear in the opening and conclusion, where you support owning a home. The comparison between rent and mortgage instalments is relevant, as are points about making changes to a property and rent increases. However, the reasons ownership is important in some countries could be explained more fully, and several claims—such as renting leaving people with “nothing at the end”—would benefit from qualification or a concrete example. Develop these ideas more evenly and make the link to the question’s focus on why ownership matters explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an identifiable structure: an introduction, a paragraph about why people rent, a paragraph comparing renting with ownership, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “On the one hand,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, progression within the body paragraphs is sometimes uneven: the first paragraph moves from temporary renting to boredom, financial limits, and loans without clearly showing how each point connects. “Moreover” is repeated, and some references, such as “they” in the discussion of owners and tenants, are not always immediately clear. Group related points together and use a wider range of precise transitions and referencing to make the argument flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of housing vocabulary, including “rent,” “property,” “home loans,” “instalment,” and “investment,” which allows you to discuss the topic clearly. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “financially stable” and “shortage of homes.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “purchasing home,” “feel boring,” “as replace of rent,” and “according to growing shortage.” These sometimes make the reader pause, even though the intended meaning is generally recoverable. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check word forms and spelling; for example, use “feel bored” for a person’s feeling and “in place of rent” for a comparison.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “as,” and “whereas.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main argument can generally be followed. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect fluency. Examples include “people who rent a home they just paying rent,” “people who paying instalment,” and “which supports middle-class families,” where the verb forms or agreement need correction. Articles are also often missing, as in “own home.” Practise building accurate subject–verb patterns and checking each sentence for a complete main clause. Greater control of these basics would make your complex ideas easier to read.
