IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, most of people prefer renting home to save money and complete other wishes. In many countries, live in rental home is very common and also people do not think to much about that case because for many people is not important. But I think owning a home is a positive situation because through that we have financial security and no monthly rental.

Firstly of all, people should have their own home through that people do not have stress to pay a monthly rent of home. E.g, I have a experience my neighbour do sucide because that person live in a rental house but he do not pay rent of three months. So, after that house owner pressurize that person to give rent then that person decide to do sucide. So, person first goal in his life to build her own house that's why I think that are positive development.

Secondly, in own house people have freedom to do changes in design and in other things and also a house is a future investment as well as financial security. E.g., If person want to do changes in house then he need to own house rather than renting one person not satisfy to do changes in renting house because that are not his future investment. On the otherside, owning a house have a financial security person have confidence no one can damage our property.

However, renting house who have to shift house again and again because of work, high intial cost to build own house and also high expenses to maintance of own house. So, people with work shifting in other cities should prefer rental house.

In conclusion, I personally prefer owning a house is more beneficial also provide a sense of security, financial security and future investment. So, that are a positive situation at any satge of life to own a house rather than renting one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall view that owning a home is positive, and you offer relevant reasons: avoiding rent pressure, having freedom to alter a property, and gaining financial security. You also acknowledge a counterpoint about relocation and the costs of ownership. However, the task asks both why home ownership is important in some countries and whether this is positive or negative. The reasons are present, but the explanation of why this matters culturally or socially in those countries is limited, and several points are asserted rather than developed. The neighbour’s suicide anecdote is dramatic but does not clearly establish a general reason for home ownership. Explain the causes more directly and support each main point with clearer, more representative reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two paragraphs supporting ownership, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the broad direction. This coherent overall arrangement supports the argument. At times, though, cohesion is mechanical or unclear: “through that” is repeated, and the long example about the neighbour moves through several events without clear links. Some references, such as “that are positive development,” are difficult to connect to the intended idea. Use clearer topic sentences, divide complex explanations into shorter linked sentences, and make pronouns and references explicit so each paragraph develops one main point smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “financial security,” “future investment,” “monthly rent,” and “maintain,” which helps communicate the main ideas. However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make parts of the response difficult to interpret. Examples include “complete other wishes,” “pressurize that person,” “high intial cost,” and “at any satge of life.” Some phrases are repeated, particularly “financial security” and “owning a house.” Build a more precise set of expressions for housing and its advantages, and check spelling and natural word combinations. For example, describe the pressure of rent payments and the costs of purchasing and maintaining a property.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the response includes some useful structures for giving reasons and contrast, such as “because” and “However.” Nevertheless, attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors can make the reader work to understand the meaning. Examples include “most of people prefer renting home,” “people do not think to much,” and “owning a house have a financial security.” There are also problems with verb forms and agreement in “he do not pay” and “he need to own house,” as well as sentence boundaries in the extended anecdote. Practise accurate articles, subject–verb agreement, and complete sentence construction; then use shorter sentences to express each step of an example clearly.
