IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is true that in many countries having our own home rather than leasing one is very crucial for individuals. This is because owning a home provides security, stability and save renting charges per month. I strongly believe that this is a positive development towards individuals overall wellbeing.
One of the major reasons is that owning a home not only provides security but also offer stability, and this can significantly contribute to individuals overall wellbeing. If people take appropriate measures to build their own home, they can significantly focus on other important tasks of their life, which would ultimately benefit the society. Studies have shown that most of the individuals prioritise building or buying their own home rather than renting one because people feel owning a home provide a sense of security.
Another significant reason is that having our own home is a cost-effective approach. Although renting a home may offer numerous advantages, it can also waste a lot of money by paying every month, particularly when owners increase the rent every month. However, the amount of rent people pay every month is totally a wasteage of money, because it will not provide them stability and security. For instance, the government should implement low interest home loans so, that every citizen can own their home. This will support the people who are financially not capable of owning a home. As a result, more and more people can live with security and save money for other tasks.
In conclusion, owning a home rather than leasing one play an important role in many individuals life. This is because it offer numerous advantages of security, stability and cost-effectiveness. I believe it is a positive development towards society and overall well-being of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your response addresses both parts of the question: you explain why home ownership matters, citing security, stability and avoiding ongoing rent, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. These relevant points support your position, and the conclusion restates it consistently. The discussion of security and stability is more developed than the financial argument, which relies mainly on describing rent as wasted money; it would be stronger to explain, for example, how ownership can build long-term financial security while also acknowledging costs such as maintenance or mortgage payments. The suggestion that governments provide low-interest loans is relevant, but its connection to the reasons people value ownership could be made clearer. More balanced development and specific support would strengthen the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs addressing reasons, and a conclusion that returns to your position. The progression from security and stability to cost is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Another significant reason,” “However,” and “As a result” help signal relationships between ideas. Some connections are less precise or repetitive, however. For instance, the second paragraph repeats the idea that ownership provides security, while “However” introduces a contrast that is not fully developed. References such as “this” in “This will support the people” are understandable but could identify the low-interest loans more explicitly. To improve cohesion, vary the development within each paragraph and use transitions only where the relationship between ideas is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “security,” “stability,” “cost-effective,” “financially,” and “low interest home loans.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt some less common phrasing. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “save renting charges,” “wasteage of money,” and “positive development towards individuals overall wellbeing.” There is also repetition of “every month” and “security and stability,” which limits flexibility. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording—for example, describe rent as an “ongoing expense” rather than “a wasteage of money.” More varied vocabulary for financial benefits and responsibilities would help you express the argument with greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses: “If people take appropriate measures…” and “Although renting a home may offer numerous advantages…”. The meaning is generally clear, and the sentence structures allow you to explain causes and consequences. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement and possessives: “owning a home … offer” should be “offers,” “owning a home provide” should be “provides,” and “owning a home … play” should be “plays.” In “individuals overall wellbeing,” a possessive form is needed. The sentence beginning “For instance” also has awkward punctuation around “so, that.” Review agreement and sentence punctuation, while continuing to use varied structures.
