IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In recent days, many parts of the world, owning a home is considered much better than reporting one. This essay will examine why people thinks that place such as high importance on home ownership and discuss whether this trend is positive and negative.
There are several reasons why people prefer to buy their own houses. The most important factor is a sense of security and stability. When people own a home, they do not have to worry about landlords increasing the rent or asking them to move out unexpectedly. Furthermore, porperty usally increase the value and demand over time. Thereforte buiing a homer is seen as a safe profitable long-term investment rather than throwing money away on monthly rent.
Overall, I belive that this situation is mostly positive. On the other hand, it gives individuals and families peace of mind. Knowing that you have a permanent place to live reduces stress and allow you to stelle down comfortably in a community. On the other hand, there can be a few negative aspects, such as they have a financial burden of a large moratge and the cost of maintenance, which can sometimes trap people in long-term debt. Some people sell their property in rural area to buy a house in urban society.
In conclusion, people prefer owning a home because it provides long-term security and fiancial benefits. While it does come with financial responisibilities, I belive that it is apositive situation overall because it gives people stability and a secure future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the question: it explains that ownership offers security and may be a long-term investment, then gives a clear overall view that it is mostly positive. These are relevant reasons, and the conclusion restates the position. However, the two reasons are not developed equally: the investment point is asserted rather than supported, and the example about selling a rural property to buy in an urban area is not clearly connected to the argument. The negative side is acknowledged through mortgage and maintenance costs, but its impact is only briefly explained. To strengthen the response, develop each point with a specific explanation or example and clarify how the disadvantages compare with the benefits.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay has a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion, and its overall direction—from reasons for ownership to a positive evaluation—is understandable. However, progression within the body is uneven. The paragraph beginning “Overall” combines the positive case, disadvantages and an unclear rural-to-urban example, so the reader has to work out how these points relate. “On the other hand” is also used twice in that paragraph, although the first point is not a contrast. Use clearer paragraphing to separate the benefits from the drawbacks, and choose linking phrases that accurately show the relationship between ideas. More precise referencing would also help connect examples to the claims they support.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “sense of security and stability,” “permanent place to live,” “financial burden” and “long-term debt.” These phrases help communicate the main ideas. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause, as in “porperty,” “usally,” “fiancial” and “moratge.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “reporting one,” “throwing money away on monthly rent” and “urban society.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, particularly when discussing housing and investment. A wider range of precise terms would help express the argument more clearly without relying on broad or awkward wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is some variety in sentence structure, including a conditional clause in “When people own a home, they do not have to worry…” and a complex sentence beginning “Knowing that you have a permanent place to live…”. The main meaning is generally understandable. However, some grammatical errors remain, including subject–verb agreement in “people thinks” and “reduces stress and allow,” and an unclear construction in “there can be a few negative aspects, such as they have…”. The opening sentence also lacks a clear grammatical connection between its introductory phrase and main clause. Review agreement, clause structure and sentence boundaries, and check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb. More consistently controlled complex sentences would improve accuracy.
