IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

There are two cases , case one is this if i want to liuve there for long time as for 20 years or 30 years then own home is mendatory for us .

The countries like UK , USA , Canada and Italy when people live there . they are trying to buy a home for its own . this is very important rather than to live in a rent home because when you live in own home there will be no tension to spenf money . rent home is not your self , you will give money . the second advantage of own home in forighn country is that you will safe because there will be no tension for you from enemy or other conflict situations . the 3rd advantage of own home in these coutries is that , wheb you have Brothers , Sisters parents mean you have all family , they will live with you without any problem .

This is a positive situation in a lot of curcumstances as we mentioned above but there is negative means disadvantages of own home in these countries for international people because whenever they want or decided to leave the coutry , then this will be the bad as well as conflict for us because we are leaving the home now . so this the nature there is nothing in the world that have all benefits and no disadvantages for that thing in the nature .

come to the point , whenever we will want to gp to forighn countries like UK , USA , Canad or Europe like country . this is best for us to purchase a home .

but if you want to go to these countries for higher study and then you want tyo back to your country , so in this case renting home or room is very very important for us . because after completing your education you will return to your home .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both questions: you suggest that long-term residents may prefer ownership to avoid ongoing rent and provide space for family, and you identify a drawback when someone plans to leave the country. Your final contrast between buying for a long-term stay and renting while studying is relevant. However, the explanation of why ownership is especially important in “some countries” remains general, and the claim that owning a home makes people “safe” from conflict is unclear and unsupported. Your view is broadly positive, but it is qualified rather than firmly explained. Develop each reason with a clear explanation or example, and make your overall judgement explicit and consistent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some organisation: the response moves from reasons for buying, to a disadvantage, and then to a contrast involving students. Phrases such as “the second advantage” and “but if” signal these shifts. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the opening announces “two cases” without clearly setting them out, and several ideas are crowded into one long paragraph. Connections between points are sometimes unclear, particularly the move from family living arrangements to safety and conflict. Use separate paragraphs for the reasons, your evaluation, and the concluding comparison. Build each paragraph around one main point, and use linking expressions to show how the explanation supports your position rather than relying mainly on numbered transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You communicate the central topic using relevant basic terms such as “own home,” “rent,” “higher study,” and “disadvantages.” There are also attempts at topic-related expressions, including “conflict situations” and “international people.” However, vocabulary is repetitive and often imprecise, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret: “rent home is not your self” and “you will safe” do not express the intended ideas clearly. Spelling errors such as “liuve,” “mendatory,” and “curcumstances” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range for housing and financial security, and check spelling and collocations. For example, distinguish “buy a home” from “own a home,” and describe rent as a “recurring expense” rather than repeating “money” and “tension.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts some longer structures, including “whenever they want or decided to leave the country,” and uses conditional ideas to contrast long-term residence with study. However, sentence structures are often incomplete or faulty, and errors frequently make relationships between ideas hard to follow. For example, “There are two cases, case one is this” is not a controlled opening, while “when you live in own home there will be no tension” lacks necessary grammatical elements. Verb forms and agreement are also inconsistent, as in “whenever they want or decided” and “this is the bad.” Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, especially where full stops and commas are used irregularly. Practise clear subject–verb sentences, articles, and consistent conditional forms before adding longer clauses.
